Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

There is a similar thread to this that is very detailed over at XBOX-SCENE. Some very good data and if you want, I will pass the link on (with the administrator's permission of course).

Anyways, I have had 2 XBOX Samsungs, 1 Phillips, 1 Thomson and a modified 616T in my XBOX at one point or another. I can say that the current XBOX Samsung drive that I have has been by far the best. Anyways here is the breakdown.

Burner: Pioneer 105. V1.21 Firmware.
Media attempted: 2x Fujifilm (Taiyo Yuden) DVD-R, 1x Princo DVD-R, 1x/2x G03 Ritek DVD-R, 4x Ritek/Ridata G04 DVD-R, 1x Princo DVD-RW, 2x Memorex DVD-RW (Ritek), 2x Fujifilm DVD-RW (MCC), 32x Prodisc CD-R, 16x Fujifilm (Taiyo Yuden) CD-R

Results:

1. Phillips DVD-ROM from V1.0 XBOX manufactured in April 2002:

Hit and miss with Princo DVD-R burned at 1x. Some games worked fine, others took several attempts to load or were prone to freezing up. 2x burned Fujifilm DVD-R (Taiyo Yuden). Every single one plays flawlessly. No issues, even backed up a couple of Princo DVD-Rs to this media and the new backups worked perfectly. G03 Ritek DVD-R, burned at 1x and 2x both played flawlessly and I used the rest of my Princos as source discs and backed them up to G03 Ritek and they all work without a hitch. G04 Riteks burned at 4x work just as well. Prodisc CD-R burned at several different speeds failed to read. 1x Princo DVD-RW failed to read on this drive.

2. XBOX Samsung pulled from V1.0 XBOX manufactured in September of 2002.

The exact same results as the Phillips drive barring the fact that the Samsung read the 1x Princo DVD-R backups just fine (although it took a little longer to load). Didn't seem to get along with CD-R for some odd reason.

3. Thomson drive pulled from 2003 XBOX.

Read both the G03 and G04 Ritek backups without a hitch and the 2x Fujifilm (Taiyo Yuden) just fine. Didn't really get along with anything else.

4. PC modified Samsung 616T.

Was exactly the same as the afore-mentioned XBOX Samsung. However, here I attempted to use Memorex (Ritek) and Fujifilm (MCC) DVD-RW as well as 16x Fujifilm Taiyo Yuden CD-R. This Samsung did not read any of the additional media attempted and had issues reading DVD-R movie backups as well as requiring a fresh power-up each time you switched out games. A bitter disappointment for a drive that is supposed to be the best. I though that maybe it was just defective, however several other people reported the same issues with their 616T drives so I know it wasn't just me.

5. XBOX Samsung pulled from an XBOX manufactured in September of '03.

This drive is my baby. It has read every media I attempted (although Princo DVD-R and the DVD-RW take a little bit longer than their quality DVD-R counterparts to load). The DVD-RW were the big surprise to me as Samsungs aren't reputed to read them.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

I found the thread at xbox-scene a bit hard to read because of too many irrelevant posts and the lack of media codes (e.g. Memorex works great, but no media code).

XBox v1.0, Philips drive (July/02).

Media: Maxell 4x DVD-R
Mediacode: RITEKG04
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 4x
Performance: works with occasional dirty disc error (works fine in v1.0 xbox w/Thompson drive, Apr/02).

Media: Fujifilm 4x DVD+R
Mediacode: RICOHJPNR01
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 2.4x (using bitsetting)
Performance: works great. (works fine in v1.0 xbox w/Thompson drive, Apr/02).

Media: Fujifilm 4x DVD+R
Mediacode: RICOHJPNR01
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 4x (using bitsetting)
Performance: partially works (intro plays okay, then dirty disc error, however it works fine in v1.0 xbox w/Thompson drive, Apr/02).

Media: Maxell 2x DVD-RW
Mediacode: TDK502sakuM3
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 2.4x
Performance: does NOT recognize disc (it works fine in v1.0 xbox w/Thompson drive Apr/02).

Media: Potex 4x DVD+RW
Mediacode: PHILIPS.041
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 4x (using bitsetting)
Performance: recognizes disc, but can't list contents nor play. (didn't try in Thompson drive)

Media: Verbatim 10x CD-RW
Mediacode: MCC something
Burner: Lite-on 411s@811s @ 10x
Performance: works fine.(didn't try in Thompson drive)

I have some TYG01s that I haven't tried yet. I'll update this after trying those. Also, I only tried 1 RICHOJPN01 @ 4x, so I'll try it again at 2.4x to see if it only works at 2.4x on my philips drive.

Anyone know of any DVD-RW or +RW media that works in the older Philips drives (circa July/02)? I have some RiData 4x DVD+RW (RICOHJPNW11) on order that I hope will work. And my friend's v1.0 xbox w/the supposedly "cr@ppy" Thompson drive can read more media then my Philips.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

Media: Ritek G04 4x (DVD-R) burned @ 8x
Mediacode:RITEKG04
Burner: NEC 2500a 1.07v2b5
Drive: Philips
Performance: Works perfect with games and movies. Also work with Samsung and Thompson drives that I have tested.

Media: Fujifilm 4x DVD+R burned @ 8x
Mediacode: RICOHJPNR01
Burner: NEC 2500a 1.07v2b5
Drive: Philips
Performance: Worked with games, but did not work with movies. Bitsetting was set to DVD-ROM.

Media: Fujifilm 4x DVD-R burned @ 8x
Mediacode: TYG01
Burner: NEC 2500a 1.07v2b5
Drive: Philips
Performance: Worked flawless with games and movies.

Media: Memorex 4x DVD+R burned @ 4x
Mediacode: -
Burner: NEC 2500a 1.07v2b5
Drive: Philips
Performance: Did not work at all.

It seems that my Xbox works best with -R discs. The Ritek G04's (DVD-R) I have tested with over 15 different xboxes and they have worked flawless on every single one. DVD-R is your best bet for use on a Xbox.

I have to agree with you there. They are the cheapest discs I have tried that have worked with every single application that I have tried. Even my PS2 loves them.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

I've had somewhat of a varying experience with being able to play DVD Movies on my Xbox DVD Player (Has Philips DVD-ROM), I've only done this for about 2 weeks and its started to get very frustrating.

I have used 2 types of Media, the Verbatim 4x DVD-Rs manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.:

Code:
Disc Type : [DVD-R]
Manufacturer ID : [MCC 01RG20 ]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
Disc Application Code : [Unrestricted Use : Consumer Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2x , 4x] (8x Cannot Be Detected)
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
And the Datasafe 4x DVD-R manufactured by Ritek:
Code:
Disc Type : [DVD-R]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEKG04]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Co.]
Disc Application Code : [Unrestricted Use : Consumer Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2x , 4x] (8x Cannot Be Detected)
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
I think Verbatim have been the best media to use for the Xbox, I will explain now:

Some movies I've obtained were in ISO and ISO/MDS format, which I've burned with Nero and Alcohol 120% respectively. At the time I had verbatim media.

There were no faults whatsoever in playback in Arrested Development NTSC or Friends PAL. (I have a UK PAL Xbox). Although accessing the extras on Arrested Development caused the xbox to lock up.

I eventually ran out of verbatims, and purchased 75 Discs of Datasafe Ritek DVD-Rs in tubs of 3, and at that time, the movies I was getting were in VIDEO_TS folders. This is when the problems started.

I have used the DVD-Video compilation in Nero 5.5.10.56 (I don't like 6) to burn the contents of the VIDEO_TS folders. ISO Level 1 and ISO 9660 was used, everything else unchecked.

The problem that have arised from datasafe and/OR using DVD-Video compilations is that movies started to either lock up the xbox, get very pixilated, stutter at some points, or even skip 30 mins ahead after a long freeze. Sometimes pressing the Info button on my xbox dvd remote caused it to lock up! Although this didn't happen with every burn so it got very frustrating for me. (these problematic DVDs worked fine on PC in WinDVD)

I had one verbatim left, so I thought I'd try reburning to that instead of the Datasafe, problems gone!

So, I should be using Verbatim media, or I shouldn't be using DVD-Video compilations in Nero, or getting movies in ISO or ISO/MDS format actually works out better for some reason. With so many possibilities its kind of hard for me to narrow down what's exactly wrong.

There's a couple of things I could try out next though, 1. Flash my LiteOn 1213S drive (I'm 3 or 4 updates behind). 2. Use the Force Xbox compatibility function in Nero, which I've found in "DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO)" Compilation after reading about it on the net just this evening. and 3. Start making ISOs of the VIDEO_TS folders in some special way that was mentioned in this thread(?) and burning them.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

UPDATE: I used DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO) compilation for a datasafe disc, with usual ISO tab settings, and in UDF tab I didn't tick Xbox compatibility, but I used Physical Partition and had UDF 2.01 ticked (read somewhere else on this forum that it makes it compatible for Xbox AND console DVD players if I ever get one in future). Then I manually made the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and copied the vobs etc. over.

A certain last episode of Friends on the DVD no longer showed the symptoms of heavy pixillation, failure to show the episode, hanging the xbox, stuttering or skipping 30 mins ahead (or 20, i dunno) which all happened randomly on several attempts to play it in the past on the bad DVD. Although this isn't definite, but I will continue to use this different method of burning VIDEO_TS folders, and will flash the Liteon 1213S on my next planned windows reboot.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

i use datasafe 4x dvd+r (ritek r03 dye if i'm not mistaken) on a sohw 812@832s lite-on drive, and it works on the xbox perfectly. I've burned a lot of these discs and used the xbox to test them, and i've never had one stutter or pixillation on any of the films. I think the xbox drive is a thompson.

I think this is due to me using omnipatcher on my drive to hack it, i applied the recommended media patches (which changed the writing method of the r03's to that of TY) as before that, i got a lot of stuttering etc.

I also used to use datasafe dvd-r's (ritek g04) but that was really bad, K-probe revealed hugh errors, and resulted in data corruption on the discs. Its well known that lite-on's prefer +r, so thats why i changed over.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

I scanned the bad DVD that caused problems with playback (took it out of the bin ) with KProbe 2.4.2, and here's the result:

Code:
Date : 04/11/2004 15:59:17
Model : 3-0-0-0 F:LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1213S TS08
Disc : DVD-R , RITEKG04 [RiTEK Corporation]
Speed : Max
ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
Scanned range : 0 - 2268355
Sampling count : 114032
Errors : 0
PI Max : 207
PI Average : 13.52
PI Total : 230874
PIF Max : 191
PIF Average : 0.37
PIF Total : 6251
No errors at all... It's probably just the Philips drive on the Xbox not liking the way it was burned previously.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

i think the pi and pif errors seem a little high, i find the xbox to be quite picky when it comes to these errors, i to have a philips drive (thought i had a thompson, but just checked up on it) and anything that i burned using my lite-on burner would stutter and stop etc at random intervals. After scanning these discs (g04's i might add) i frequently get the same sort of results as you (maybe getting higher pi and pif). I think its just that lite-on drives really don't like dvd-r's so i stick to +r's now, works perfectly every time.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

I didn't realise there were issues with Xbox. How stupid of me.
Recently copied a DVD for a friend (RICOHJPNR02 with book type set to DVD-ROM). Scanned fine but won't play fully on the XBox - starts breaking up and eventually freezes.
Any suggestions?

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

What speed did you burn it at? And what program did you use to burn it? I sometimes find that a burned dvd plays fine on my pc but the xbox just stutters and freezes, this is usually because of rubbish media (but i think your media should be fine).

Also just another thought, when you burn it, what do you name the dvd? Because when naming it it should be capital letters and the spaces should be replaced with "_", e.g. VIDEO_DVD. I find the xbox is picky about this to.

Oh and finally do you know what kind of drive the xbox has, if its thompsons, phillips or samsung? If you look at this site,

http://www.xbreporter.com/xboxdvddrivecomparison.php

and find out what drive you have and read about it, it may shed some light as to why it won't work.

4x and CloneDVD2.
And, yes, I use caps with underscores.
But, no, don't what type of drive it is - you'd think good media booktyped DVD-ROM would work?

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

Well if the xbox was bought near the time when it came out, the drive is probably a thompson, thompson drives are the worst at reading media, in which case you might want to use another brand of media, but stick to dvd+r as lite-on drives don't like dvd-r's.

The only other things i can think of is, is you can, then slow down the burning to 2 or 2.4x, you can do that in nero if you can't with clone dvd.

I had the same problem as you, it was fixed because i used omnipatcher to patch my 812s to a 832s, i applied the recommended tweaks, and it changed the writing profile of the dvd's i use for burning. I use Ritek R02 and it changed it to T02 (TY media), then it started working perfectly with the xbox.

Re: Media for XBOX, please post your experiences!

I use only G04 media usually Ritek Ridisc also Datawrite yellow 4X G04
Also I found that Verbatim discs run very quiet in my X-BOX.
Also I haven't found a Princo Disc that will play games on my X-BOX although the media center and Boxplorer will read almost any type of disc. You have to record them in ISO/UDF format I think UDF only or ISO only doesn't work.
I use either QWIX or Craxtion to create my discs.
Also to everyone that says they burn their discs at 4X and above I have done this a few times and it makes the game sometime not work or freeze at certain parts of the game. But with DVD video or just normal files 4X doesn't cause a problem.

Media: Ritek G04 4x (DVD-R) burned @ 1X
Mediacode:RITEKG04
Burner: Optorite 201
Drive: Samsung
Performance: Always works

Any one used the MMC type discs or the Fujifilm dye discs?
Any get these to work? Datawrite 8X Prodisc ADVDINFO: F01 / FUJIFILM03
Also are GO5 as good as G04?

Well I had a philips drive and it was just terrible at reading any sort of media luckily I got my hands on a Samsung drive and replaced it so far no problems.

Media: Fujifilm 8x DVD+R 4.7 GB
Burner: NEC 2100a at 4x, NEC 3500a at 16x
Drive: Thomson, Samsung

Performance NEC 2100a at 4x on Thomson: Works amazingly (no coasters) and reads perfectly almost every time.

Performance NEC 2100a at 4x on Samsung F: Works amazingly (no coasters) and reads perfectly every single time. (I can start it up, open tray, pop it in at the last moment, and it still works!)

Performance NEC 3500a at 16x on Thomson: Works amazingly (1 coaster every 25 or so) and reads perfectly almost every time.

Performance NEC 3500a at 16x on Samsung 605-F: Works amazingly (1 coaster every 25 or so) and reads perfectly every single time. (I can start it up, open tray, pop it in at the last moment, and it still works!)

You get the point: NEC + FUGIFILM = Working GREAT!

Except for when I was burning on my dying (and now dead NEC ND2510A) I have found that with my XBox, which is a Thompson drive, it plays all DVD media either DVD-R or DVD+R. It's a great player but it won't do any RW media which is a downfall although not a major one for me. I don't know why I have no real problems with the XBox as a DVD Player but I can throw anything in it and I know it'll work for the most part.

That's quite an exceptional Thomson drive you have there. All Thomson drives I have used had problems with +R and +RW, while -R and -RW always worked pretty well (using -RW requires inserting the disc twice before it reads).

Xbox v1.0 Phillips
Media: Ridata (RitekG04) DVD-R
Burner: Pioneer DVR-106D

Not one coaster and they all work perfectly.

Use XDVDFSTools to create .ISO images retaining factory layouts.

My Phillips does not read DVD+RW.
