Re: Police Dogs Sniff for Pirated DVDs

According the article, these dogs have yet to find any pirated CDs, so there's only been 'false positives. However, this is really extreme regarding the lengths the industry is going to.

I wonder what these dogs' thinking pattern is like.

"Hmm.. listen Skip, this smells like poo ...must be the latest in Hollywood"

Re: Police Dogs Sniff for Pirated DVDs

We already have CATS that can "sniff" out the bad media, and now we have DOGS that can sniff out pirated media.

What will they think of next?!

LOL! I actually got pulled over by one of the sniffer dogs at TO Pearson airport... for the evil crime of having some illicit potato chips in my hand luggage. Maybe I am now on US no fly list?
(Yeeew... poo chips )

Even funnier - the original article said the 2 dogs were at Stanstead airport in UK - it's a small airport in London suburbs - mostly used for package vacation tours. LOL again!! Many DVD smugglers will be taking their Hollywood breaking collections to the Costa De Sol for a 2 week break????

Re: Police Dogs Sniff for Pirated DVDs

I was trying to find information on the training times needed, but all I could unearth was that training time took about 2 weeks if the dog passes the particular certification. I thought it was closer to at least 6 weeks, as I remember some Animal Planet show with some military officers training dogs in San Antonio, TX (Lackland AFB, IIRC) no less. I also believe the 'wash out' rate was something around 95-98%, so there was always a great deal of trouble training dogs, to get them to develop the particular skill (to sniff explosives, drugs, etc.) While I did find several sites claiming to train dogs in various areas, I could not find a lot more, such as a general informational article on dog training times, success/failure rates, etc. While dogs are useful for this purpose, I get the feeling that somehow it's not something that can really be done on a wide scale, at least for this purpose? If someone could find a fairly comprehensive article regarding this, that would be nice to see posted here to further inform.
