| Nvidia Releases NVPerfHUD 2.0 & Gets 13 Games To Use Shader Model 3.0 Quote: NVPerfHUD
NVPerfHUD analyzes your graphics pipeline performance one stage at a time and displays real time statistics that can be used to diagnose performance bottlenecks in your Direct3D 9 application.
NVPerfHUD 2.0 includes several new features, including drag-and-drop application launching, a batch size histogram, shader visualization, and new pipeline analysis options.
Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) generate images through a pipelined sequence of operations. A pipeline runs only as fast as its slowest stage, so tuning graphical applications for optimal performance requires a pipeline-based approach to performance analysis. NVPerfHUD helps you improve the overall performance of your application by identifying the slowest stage in your graphics pipeline.

According to a report by The Inquirer, as many as 13 upcoming games will be using Shader Model 3.0, for which only nVidia hardware supports. The list includes games like Splinter Cell 3, Battle for the middle earth, Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl, Vampire: Bloodlines, Tiger Woods 2005, Madden 2005, Driver 3.0, and Metal of Honor: Pacific Assault. NVida spent a few extra millions to support it, and it seems it was worth the effort.
ATI has previously given convincing reasons for why Shader Model 3.0 is not important at the present time, and how Shader Model 2.0b, the one their hardware supports, can do the job just as fine. However, with the number of important games supporting the latest shader model, this reasoning is expected to change.
