New zero day virus on the move

Finds a VML vulnerability inside IE

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 19 September 2006, 15:45
SECURITY outfit Sunbelt says that it has seen a nasty new Zero Day exploit which exploits a VML vulnerability in IE.

Writing in his bog, Sunbelt's research boffin Eric Sites said that the hack was discovered coming from a pron site. We guess someone was testing the porn site for security issues when they noticed the exploit taking place.

The exploit uses a bug in VML in Internet Explorer to overflow a buffer and inject shellcode. It has been seen at a number of different sites since its first appearance.

The exploit can be stopped by turning off Javascripting. Alternatively, you could wipe Windows from your hard-drive and install Linux with Firefox. µ

Translates to: install driver hell with slowth!

Firefox is SLOW!
Opera is fast and nice. I use it regularly.

That it's terribly slow, ugly, and not a native Windows app. Lots of no-nos for me.

Firefox "slow"? What's considered "fast" in the browser benchmarks these days?

Personal preferences aside: why is not being a "native Windows app" held to be a bad thing?

Re: New zero day virus on the move

Opera the last time I tried them was advert based but I heard they changed all that. Firefox and MS are the browsers that all the malware guys are looking at but some are starting to target Opera as well now.

I installed Firefox a year ago or so and i can't believe the hype. I used Opera for 4-5 years and FF isn't close

Luckily my IE is totally fxcked up together with Windows Media Player so i won't use either by accident.

Well, thanks for the heads up concerning the virus/exploit. Time to make sure things are up to date.........
