Mississippi outlaws sex toys.

From Dan Abrams:

Quote:
There is a landmark legal battle of constitutional proportions being fought down in Mississippi. It involves fundamental rights protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments, not to mention the rights of certain small business owners to satisfy their customers. This week, another court refused to recognize Mississippians’ right to find companionship for 29.99 and so a law outlawing the sale of sex toys will stand.

“A person commits the offense of distributing unlawful sexual devices when he knowingly sells, advertises, publishes or exhibits to any person any three-dimensional device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs or offers to do so or possesses such devices with the intent to do so.”

Well, I am glad to see that the local legislators are focusing on the most pressing issues of the day. I’ve long believed that a three-dimensional, possibly battery-operated device is far more menacing than a handgun. In Mississippi, people can buy guns at a gun show with no background check and certain weapons can be carried almost anywhere. Sure, guns and toys can bring joy and a sense of comfort to the user, but apparently the legislators concluded that a genital replica is a far greater threat to society.

Does this mean it’s illegal to sell Zucchini or Cucumbers?

Re: Mississippi outlaws sex toys.

I believe somewhere in Florida some rich guy is or was going to build a bible belt town where such things as well as many other things were not going to be allowed. The constitutionality of such an endeavor is already being challenged and in the end the town rules would be turned back. The Mississippi thing (for people outside the US) who do not understand the way parts of the US works is that Mississippi is in the center of what is called the bible belt and being in that area the church goers are going to try to make you follow the good book even if it kills you. I have spent time down there and to this day im still amazed at what goes on considering things like the KKK were formed down there. In short it’s a weird place to live.

Heh, it seems the Mississippian rulers (?) are unaware of two things
A) It's 2006
B) You can order anything from the internet

So all they do is hampering business for their own voters... Smart move.

Re: Mississippi outlaws sex toys.

Think of the gambling that was lost in those storms. Millions of dollars a day going to the states, Now all gone. Why because the church base goverment decided that gamblingg was evil so to get around the laws they put the gambling on boats and they floated off land. (now all the boats are about a mile inland and destroyed) What wisdom we have here. Where do they find these people. Mostly under rocks in a pond I think

Re: Mississippi outlaws sex toys.

The ban is intended to hurt "sex shops" and is not much different than the bans in a dozen other states. As for the casinos, they're illegal in most states and only allowed off-shore because of the riverboat loophole. They were also supposed to be able to be moved out of the path of a hurricane, but for some reason they stopped doing that after a half-dozen false alarms and really paid the price. Well, if you pay federal income tax, you're paying the price...

FYI, casinos contribute a little tax revenue but take ten times that from the locals; they were only popular because of the tourism money. Whatever tax revenue they produce, the state government manages to make disappear just like it did the tobacco settlement. The Casinos are starting to reopen, now allowed to build on shore, and I'm sure you folks will be glad to know that after paying to rebuild them, your federal tax dollars will continue to go to the casinos, except now with an extra step: through FEMA.

You say it like the casinos are breaking into your house and robbing you. Casinos are just another industry in the gambling business. People have free will and if they want to go into a casino, thats their choice. Its like those two fat girls who sued mcdonalds for making them fat. It may be true that the casinos are taking 10 times the amount they are giving away, but if they were giving the same amount they were giving away, the business could only survive in a communist state, which by the tone of your post, you dont want.

Re: Mississippi outlaws sex toys.

If it really were people wasting their own earned money it might not be objectionable on that point; but what it really is, more often than not, is poor people spending money they were given by the government for their children's welfare. Next, some politician will come along and say, "look at how the poor suffer," and insist on taking more of your money...

Go to Ebay. Im sure you can find tons of food rations, socks, shoes,gi shorts given out and maybe even a few of those trailers they were given to live in, all for a very good price. Welcome to Earth

And as airhead pointed out your local sex shop is as far away as your computer or phone. So no sale in those states mean more sales and revenue for the states that are open for business. Who pays the price in the end

The political angle of "it's for the childern" is starting to wear thin.

True: But if people want to gamble it's freely around also. Thats why they sell the food rations. More of a general comment.

I'm surprised that looking like that .. you don't have a long line of willing volunteers to give you a helping hand .. or something along those lines

Admitting that you've illegally downloaded movies/songs and need help to process/burn is comparable to robbing a bank, and walking into the bank the next day holding the bags of money to deposit them into your account.
Don't be surprised if people laugh at you when you make the headlines.

The law in Arkansas says that even if you get divorced, you're still legally brother and sister. I think that applies in most of the southern states.

I'll see your senator, and I'll raise you two judges. /.
