Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

I hope they have a sign up for the free CD like they did for SP2.

Just to add. The story says no SP3 for XP 64 bit but they will still have support for it.

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

Methinks this be a setup.

XP SP3...most likely laden with DRM and enough bugs to force an "upgrade" to Vista down the road.

Probably not a set up. I have had the beta of SP3 running here for a couple of months, and it's fine.

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

There was a rogue 'Vista Transformation Pack' that went under the name of XP SP3 Build 2 (see discussion here), but now there really is an MS Service Pack Release Candidate that includes all the updates and hot-fixes since SP2:

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

So they will only be msupdate and download without letting the xp users purchase the sp3 on media to be shipped to ones' home? I would like it on a cd to pay a little to get it shipped to me like sp2 did rather then downloading it. Hopefully this updates doesn't include DRM and hardware disable functions that Vista does if you switch the motherboard or main hardware components. I have to wait and see if on its' official public release to end users....

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

As far as I can see, the release candidate (RC) doesn't introduce more DRM than already present in SP2. Haven't checked the hardware disable behaviour, but I was under the impression that this was a function of the OEM versions of XP, rather than service packs.

Remember that there are a lot of corporate networks running XP, who are not even dreaming of moving to Vista; and for them an SP3 would be a long-awaited addition. It would be unbelievably stupid of MS to suddenly hit them with a ton of protection layers and changes that would need to be overcome.

That link is to the Release Candidate (RC). For non-subscribers the Release-to-manufacture (RTM) is not available until 29th April:

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

This isn´t exactly new news, but it looks like MS is finally recognising that Vista is not a resounding success, and XP availability and support may continue a lot longer, and that Windows 7 may be ready for testing as early as next year...

I´m sticking with XP as long as possible..and I guess I´ll check out what SP3 has to offer too...when I´ve seen some in-depth testing...

It's mostly just a wrap-up of security updates since SP2. Nothing very exciting.

My desktops both run XP SP2 currently, but my laptop has Vista, so i'm dealing with both at the moment.

I'm certainly in no hurry to get rid of XP on my desktops.

I dont care what anyone says, Vista is a complete failure in the business sector, when MS reported earnings, if you saw the breakdown, their Operating system sales have plummeted. 96% of all Vista sales came from Oem Vista OS on new machines pre-installed. I do not know of any business in my area that has upgraded to Vista.

I couldn't agree more if Business sector bluk at such bloated, lackware O/S it's just like Vista ME revisited again. Looks like they forgot what made them the premier O/S company. They claim people like Vista on their computer but it's only cause that the only option they allow the electronics seller to tell customers how is that a option for end users choice. I wait for SP3 release and install that on my Antique XP SP2 O/S LOL computer and keep on computing...no thanks to M$$$

Re: It's a wrap: Microsoft finishes XP SP3

From July, Dell are only offering XP via downgrade rights, and they claim much of their hardware doesn't work in XP ... Lol!

Works better in Vista

Last time I noticed, they were providing the option (extra) for Creative based Sound Cards -> Works in Vista (if all you want is basic stereo sound).
