| Re: Google the new villian? Well, in a way they're pretty right. Google will be eventually so big and involved in so many things that it's not even funny anymore to no earthling at all. So, what can the rest of the 5.99999999999999 billion people on this planet do? Envy and complain, even when everything seems free. |

Anyways Googlebot will one day be a totalitarian ruler subjecting humanity with his secret spider-police. But we wont know it, because it will be in a nice and useful way. As long as they dont do what Altavista did they should be fine.

| Re: Google the new villian? I dont think Google will get the MS hating crowd, the ones (mainly Linux nerds) that are annyoed that they have to deal with Windows or Windows users on the job or anywhere else, when obviosuly UNIX is so much better at everything. They feel in minority in the great big world where the rest of us use Windows ![]() Google is for now just a webpage and soon a IM-client. Its as it says in the article, easy to replace. An operating system is another matter.

| Re: Google the new villian? Google so far seems to have stuck with its priciples of openness, information for the good of the people, and do-no-evil. Perhaps I'm naive to think this, but I have a good feeling that this won't change anytime soon. I don't see Google as an evil conquerer. It is the liberating conquerer, and I welcome its ascendency (especially since, as a computer scientist, I really love their culture and devotion to algorithms; their free culture, BTW, will serve to hopefully buffer them from becoming evil).

| Re: Google the new villian? @debro But seriously, how often do you see a technology company seize market share based purely on merit? Google captured search not because it had the brainwas--er, marketing--arm of Apple and not because it had the brute force of Microsoft, but because it was simply just the best and cleanest. All of Google's products have been, I think, pretty nice technologically. Google Maps, for example, is just plain cool. Gmail not only sports the best web mail interface, but also offers what others don't--POP3, SMTP, forwarding, and massive [constantly growing] space--so hey, if Gmail overthrows Hotmail or Yahoo mail, I won't be shedding any tears. And Google Talk, though spartan, is based on open standards, so I can access it using Gaim (which is nice for people who don't like Google's simplistic interface), and so if Google Talk trounces on the others, I'll be rejoicing. @Kenshin The media 1) more often than not does not really understand what they're reporting on and 2) needs to sensationalize everything (and these black and white good vs. evil things seem to be a nice forumula) in order to capture the ever-shortening attention span of the general public (not just of Americans, mind you; this is a world-wide problem).

| Re: Google the new villian? I was actually comparing South Korean media with US media. The US media is especially liberal. European media is hardly as powerful. In South Korea, everything had been controlled by dictators so it was easy to engineer assassinations and kidnappings until very recently. They also used the media announcing the end of some jaebols as large as LG and Samsung but also to protect the interest of some other jaebols. I was sarcastic about the fact those liberal media do nothing about much worse companies that help dictators kidnap, torture, and massacre innocent citizens while calling some evil. (My favorite TV drama in this summer is "The 5th Republic" of South Korea and I happen to be 10km from the very place that saw the small civil war in May, 1980.) Calling US media was just a joke after B_K's remark. ![]()

![]() Borgle got to the top by doing the best, providing the best product. It's a competetive world, and borgle is the current winner. The media generally don't understand what they are reporting, or if they do, they try to sensationalise it to keep an audience captivated. Now Borgle are doing the bright thing and diversifying, aka moving their eggs out of the one basket. Borgle are gonna be around for a long time, if they keep their current (brilliant) strategists. Also, Google always give people a fair warning what they're upto, and there's never been proof that Google are doing anything underhanded. Advanced features like script blocking for certain sites ... etc, reporting is required to identify the site & the appropriate script code/etc. No-one has certained that google is collecting information on users & whatnot. Similarly, Gmail, while they may easily read Gmail users email, have you ever read your corporate IT policy. Sys admins have the right to ruffle through your online underwear draw looking for anything suspicious, similarly, google is required, sometimes by law to do just that. Hint->Don't put anything compromisable on hardcopy/electronic.

Also debro I must reiterate one of the cardinal rules of the forum, you must not confuse the modelatol! I had to Google (hah!) Borgle to conclude that it was nothing but your imagination.

| Re: Google the new villian? Expandable -> Network Storage Array. How? You just said it. You are using 6MB of your allocated 2545MB. Most people use email predominantly for Text/small piccies. It's only student and Computer nerds that use more By the time you, and everyone else, hits 2545MB, 2.5GB of HD space will cost a pitence and HD sizes will be in the tens of TB's ![]() Besides, they probably buy their HD's in bulk lots from manufacturers at a few dollars a piece rather than $100 retail ![]()

| Re: Google the new villian? 1GB or even 10GB email space per account can't cost too much considering some web-hard companies allow just as big space for uploads and downloads on the web which is far more useful than simple email accounts. Hardly any forum that has over 1GB web space really use the space well. One forum I visit most often use 12TB out of 17TB even though it has over 20,000 daily visitors. 12TB is extremely small for 20K+ people ready to spend hours per day downloading and uploading at 1-10MB/s. Meanwhile, their business makes nice profits. My own forums in some such websites right now have no more than 0 byte.
