French software users surrender to police!

While I did not opt to post this on the CDFreaks main page (due to the source article being dated), this has scary implications, at least in France. It should not be a 'crime' to use DVDecrypter to transfer a legally purchased DVD to something else, but it is for the time being. The article does not explain if the people turned themselves in voluntarily, or did so before being 'busted,' as perhaps they knew the police would be coming to get them.

I believe it was a sign of protest to the new law. They havent done any harm to anybody but nonetheless must be fined and or jailed. If they do, in the country like France some serious riots may follow. Thats what polititians get for being dirty or stupid or both. Way to go guys!

Following the links, it's clearly a action to protest against copy protection and DRM in France. Looks like it's the guys from www.matbe.com .

Re: French software users surrender to police!

I realized it was a protest after I posted, but it seems extreme to protest in such a manner. Of course it does get the legislation changed to remove such major restrictions, *and* if the people involved aren't made an example of (perhaps if public pressure makes the politicians cave in), this will prove the catalyst for change.

It is curious France approved this bill, *and* chose not to deal a serious blow to DRM when it had the chance.
