AMD To Demonstrate Dual-Core Chips

Quote:
Aiming to deflate archrival Intel, Advanced Micro Devices this week will show off its dual-core chips, which will start to trickle out toward the middle of next year.

AMD on Tuesday will show off a Hewlett-Packard ProLiant server with four dual-core Opteron chips at a facility in Austen, Texas, bringing the functional number of chips in four-processor servers to eight.

"When you load Microsoft (Server 2003), it shows up as eight processors," said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of the microprocessor business unit at AMD.

Re: AMD To Demonstrate Dual-Core Chips

Finally, a desktop case will be able to have eight powerful processors.

Finally, a company that introduces something that actually has 2 cores in a processor instead of using some gimmick to fool J6Ps and J6Ps who think they're experts into thinking they have 2 processors, indeed.

Are you saying dual-core AMD processors will be cheaper than today's Athlon XP processors? It'll be very good to expect since that will make the total cost of eight-core processors under US$200.

Re: AMD To Demonstrate Dual-Core Chips

Well I sure hope so. The current A64/FX are too expensive for my liking.

Re: AMD To Demonstrate Dual-Core Chips

I doubt you'll really get one, you sound like one of those hardcore Intel fans.

Now, here's an interesting article cooked up by Mr. Ed over at overclockers. I like to see people grill some steaks on their duo core Intel CPU.

A hardcore Intel fan buying 7 AMD processors and about 10 AMD-only motherboards in just about one year? That was about three years ago. My first processor was AMD and the latest I've got are Athlon 64 and mobile Athlon XP Barton. However, all my servers use Intel P-III and Intel P4-based Xeon.

I used to be an AMD enthusiast. Around 2000, some people in South Korea started to become too much involved with AMD processors emotionally, not only economically and technologically, and they soon started isolating everyone who says anything good about Intel processors. That also happened in THG forums and other places though to much less serious degrees. That helped make AMD Korea very arrogant which in turn made some of the previous AMD enthusiasts in South Korea criticize their business behaviors. The largest South Korean computer hardware site, KBench.com even created a special place for AMD processor warranty policies that time that later was integrated back to the original place for all manufacturers. Quite naturally, I do not recommend anyone to buy AMD processors now, not from AMD Korea.

Sell me some AMD dual-core processors at decent US OEM prices and I'll gladly distribute them to South Korean consumers without any profit for myself.

Quote:
If you look ahead to overclocking dual-cores, you're probably looking at needing to cool something in the neighborhood of 250-300 watts.
That might be the reason why I won't buy the first-generation AMD dual-core processors. Dothan-based dual-core Intel processors would be better for me. 10x more power consumption could often mean 100x more price in real-world situation in South Korea which is why I recommend LCD monitors and LCD-based notebooks instead of CRT and desktops to South Koreans unless they earn something like US$100 per year. Even if the dual-Hammer processor costs US$50 per unit, 250 to 300 watt power consumption means it is as bad as running two Nocona 2.8GHz 800MHz FSB processors in today's systems. But then both AMD and Intel are running business in a country with the most available energy sources. Toshiba and Sharp in Japan (for notebooks and notebook parts), LG and Samsung in South Korea (for LCD panels and semiconductors), and VIA and TSMC in Taiwan (for chipsets, processors, and semiconductor foundry), they are all East Asian that choose to make products use less power because being too dependent on energy importation could mean destroying their countries before they could ever destroy by not exporting electronics and semiconductor products.
