XP won't recognize Benq 1620. Code 19

Hi, I just received my Benq 1620. I bought it based on the good reviews found at this site.

Anyway, after installing the drive and rebooting, I found that Windows XP Professional did not recognize a drive letter at all. Power is connected. Drive tray opens and closes, but won't read any type of disc. Front power light comes on but it just keeps spinning the disc without ever posting an icon on the desktop.

I double and triple checked the connections. I made sure the drive was set to "Master" on the IDE channel, which I know is correct; I briefly set it to slave and XP wouldn't boot plus the previous DVD reader I had in that slot was also set to master.

I went into Device Manager and saw that Windows recognized the drive as "Adapi DVD DD 2x16x4x16". However, it was highlighted with the yellow exclamation point symbol. When I click on the symbol to trouble shoot or try and fix the drive through Hardware Wizard it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (Code 19)

I tried to uninstall the hardware in order to force windows to reinstall the correct "driver" upon reboot. No luck. Same problem(s).

My theory is that there is something wrong within Windows, not the drive.

I don't know what else to try. Any ideas? Please help. Thank you.

you could try rollbacking back the operating system to before you installed the BENQ 1620 drive. it does sound like a windows problem. try using another ide cable on the drive and also you could delete the ide that the BENQ drive is on and let windows redetect it. lastly install the drive in another pc to see if it works.

My brother had the exact same problem. I fixed it by uninstalling his Nvidia IDE drivers & letting windows install the default ones & then changing out his IDE cable. It works perfectly fine now.

Re: XP won't recognize Benq 1620. Code 19

Thanks for the input guys. It's nice to have support group such as this.
I don't have nvidia IDE drivers. My motherboard is a ASUS A7V333.
However, I did some more digging around the net and found the solution to my problem. Maybe this will help someone else who has the same problem and ends up doing a search and finds this message.

Apparently I had some type of registry error probably due to some funky CD burning programs I had installed and reinstalled ( Clone CD maybe?). Somehow the registry had gotten corrupt.

Anyway I found this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314060
and edited the registry exactly as it suggested. Only deleted a couple of key lines.
After I rebooted my new Benq was recognized worked perfectly! In fact... my Liteon 163 DVD reader which I was replacing with the Benq 1620, that I thought had gone out, started working after I did this as well. Amazing!!

Tested ECDC 5.x a few years back when it was part of Adaptec. Roxio is on my permanent AVOID list.
