Prodisc dvd-r doesn't work well the BENQ 1620. It's discussed at cdrlabs forum. That is one media that does not work well for my BENQ.

This thread shows at least some people are getting some really good burns off Prodisc DVD-R. Personally, I wouldn't risk it but I was pretty impressed by this kind of burn on a Prodisc. I would've thought his PIE max would've been closer to 80 or 100.

I should have posted that with my 2 BENQ 1620 drives I use firmware B7P9 which does not burn PRODISC DVD-R disc well. FUJIFILM 03 is also PRODISC. Firmware B7TP does not work well with the media that I use.

Agreed! Also It seems that there is growing another "theory" that using bad media will kill your drive.

Would you use Remoulded Tyres on a Lamborghini?

Only people that have a Lamborghini are in a position to answer that question. The rest will only dream

P.S. You sound like you would ruin that beautiful car by having the steering wheel on the wrong side

Of course on a Diablo the only proper position for the steering wheel is on the right side of the car (if you are sitting in it!).

But anyway, that was off-topic. BenQ is one of the better burners when it comes to cheaper media in all honesty. Big thing with cheap media is not to worry about overspeeding and just burn it at rated speed. Safe way to go for the cheap stuff. Now Fake TY might make the BenQ cry.

Re: will using cheap media degrade my benq?

Doesn't Prodisc R03 (+R 8X) burn beautifully with the Benq 1620 ?
I saw some scans in the Media test forum tending to prove this.

It seems like this media albeit cheap would give no shame to the burner and its master.

Would anyone confirm ?

My drive burns ProdiscS04 (DVD dash) almost as good as Taiyo Yuden´s TYG02...

12x speed burn and a overspeeded 16x burn.

Using this media will not "degrade" your drive. I have burned more then 100 low cost ProdiscS04, Prodisc R03, RiTEKG04, CMC MAG´s, aso, together with same amout of high "quality" rated madia, and my drive is healthier then ever.

Happy burning.

Re: will using cheap media degrade my benq?

If you do a little searching and a little reading, you will find that Prodisc DVD-R media can be several different MIDs (media-ids). With each of the different MIDs, user experiences vary all over the place, depending on the drive, the firmware, etc, etc. The original Prodisc S03 (4x DVD-R) was pretty good, and worked fine in my Benq 1620. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.
