BenQ / Philips Burner Discuss, What is that loud whining sound? Freezing? at CD and DVD Burners forum; Just got a DW 1640 (badged as compusa) It plays commercial CDs and DVDs no problem. When I try to extract data from a burned disc (data or music) it often sends a very loud piercing tone to the speakers and freezes the whole system. I mean *everything*, can't

What is that loud whining sound? Freezing?

Just got a DW 1640 (badged as compusa)
It plays commercial CDs and DVDs no problem.
When I try to extract data from a burned disc (data or music) it often sends a very loud piercing tone to the speakers and freezes the whole system. I mean *everything*, can't even get the 3 fingered salute to work. Media brand does not seem to matter.

Benq tool tells me:
Device: DVDRW DRW-6S160P
Firmware: PSG7

I tried to run bsrb firmware update but it said the writer is not allowed to be updated

I'm not trying to do anything fancy, so I'm not sure that cross flashing is required.

Any thoughts for this newbie?

TIA

Win 2K pro
2x AMD 1.2
768 MB ddr

Re: What is that loud whining sound? Freezing?

Welcome to the forum

About the drive, I'm not sure that you really have a benq 1640: it seems a different drive to me.

About the ripping issue, it seems a typical bad burned disc problem. If you have this problem only with burned discs, then I think that these burned discs have a lot of errors, and are unreadable on that drive.

About the freezing issue, I had a similar problem with a drive: in my computer that drive caused freeze and only with the reset button on the case I was able to do a restart. For some reasons, that drive doesn't work at all in my computer, but it works flawlessly in my brother computer. The only solution I was able to find for this problem was to get rid of the drive (now my brother have a brand new drive on his computer )

That looks like a Liteon SHW-160P6S OEM. Or are there two drives installed?

Get the Liteon Flash Utility and check if you can backup your original firmware with that. If that works, then it is a Liteon drive for sure.

I would not try to flash other firmware yet. Also, I don't think, your problem is firmware related.

Make sure your drive is properly installed - Jumper setting, cables and connectors in good state and properly fixed. Note, that a Liteon drive should be connected using a 80 wired IDE flat ribbon cable as this is an UDMA 4 drive.
