Re: Unofficial BenQ DVD ReWriter Firmware Page

Wow. Sounds really cool !!!
Thanx for the link.

Anyone knows whether one could trust that side?
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate that work.
Just I'm a little bit nervous. As it comes out of nothing from one day to the other.

Also, has anyone an idea what '.CVT/Patched' means?
Does that mean you could also flash it to another burner than the one it is officially made for (like for 800@822)?

Thanks a lot!

I am looking the FW B2D7.

Although we can find it here:

http://211.20.183.97/files/Driver/DVDRW/B2D7.zip

but the file is corrucpted...

BTW, the "Patched" just means that,

you can flash from B2XX to B3XX or B4XX DERECTLY.

It's just the same with using ".CVT+WinDWFlash".

And Even you have a REAL 830A, you can not apply an official B4C8 to it.
BenQ has admitted there's some bug in the official B4C8.

Hmm, interesting. I guess we can expect to see a new fw soon.

Yeah it doesn't work at the DW830A that I got from BenQ at least. I though that may be since it was "overclocked" by BenQ (it has both a DW800A sticker and Dw830A sticker on it).

Look for the thread "Success 800@822" (or something similar, I'm not sure about the title). There's a link to one such file.

Read carefully Jetstudio's reply thread (2 above yours) and download from his website firmwares of your choices.

I bought 2 BenQ 800A last month. One upgraded to 822A and the other is still in the retail box to be installed into my computer at basement. If you can provide a suitable software to extract the B2D7, I will extract it and send you the B2D7.

Great page, we need to finish testing our DOS flasher for the DW822A. We've looked at BenQ/Philips DVD Burners before, but while the drives were supposed to use a MIPS 4000 we could never make much sense of them. Please drop us an email if you get a chance.

Are you sure that the 1650S RPC1 patch is of 5.HV, it looks to be 5.AV or something else. 5.JV has been patched for a while, came from BenQ Europe via a user, so we don't have a direct link to it.

Though the title contains "Un-official",
in fact,
all the firmwares in this page, including RPC1s, are directly released from BenQ.

There were so-call "patched" on that page previously, but due to some reasons,
I removed them , and instead added .CVT files, which were extracted by myself.

There is indeed a dos flasher, works the same as WinDWFlash.exe.
My e-mail address is also on the page.

Due to the datasheet of PNX7850, the processor in BenQ 800A and 822A, the core is an embeded MIPS PR1910 by Philips.
I am also looking for the tool.

Thanks.

1. How do you extract the .cvt files from the fw?
2. So I guess the dos flasher has the same sum checking as the exe?

For question 2. is much more easier, I answer it first.
Yes, the DOS Flasher use the same .CVT files like the WinDWFlash.
So, the DOS Flasher is not more powerfully than WinDWFlash do.
We still can not use DOS Flasher to restore 830A to 800A.

Then, the first question.

As I mentioned before.
There is no particular program to extract these .CVT files.
I use Hex Workshop to do that.

When I first got the Philips 8401 CVT files as well as the WinDWFlash.exe,
I started to inspect the structure of CVT files.
In fact, the CVT files consist of 3 parts: CVT header( 36 Bytes ), Firmware itself ( 2 MB ), and Checksum ( 4 Bytes ).
Before the firmware B2I7 and B3D7 ( Including these two ), the firmware do exist in Windows Flasher ( .exe file ) in their original forms, that means they were not been scrambled or encrypted.
As for those after these two version, they have been encrypted.
Because I am not good at programming, I can not develope some extractor to extract them from the Windows Flashers.
I have to debug them, usually using Softice, the dump them from memory to disk.
That's how I extract these CVT files.

Hope that's helpful to you.

Wow, and while companies like Sony go around encrypting their firmwares, BenQ goes as far as doing the RPC1 themselves. I suddenly have a lot more respect for this company now.

Re: Unofficial BenQ DVD ReWriter Firmware Page

Over at Benq they don't seem to realize that the big success of the NEC-drives is very much because of the ability of the scene to mod the firmware.
If they only put stones in the way of the fan-community they will only get less sold devices because people will just opt for other drives that are more flexible.
Especially if you keep in mind that the DW800Dual for instance doesn't really get updated anymore, already by now...

I wasn't too happy about the 800 dual firmware support either. Especially after promising a 4x firmware when ppl paid $10 for the dual fw upgrade. B3D7 was only on their site for about 2 weeks then removed. We haven't seen anything since then.
