System Requirements

Hi, I am totally newbie in using DVD and I would like to buy a DVD burner to store my files, usually in .avi, .mpg, .mp3, .jpg formats.

I am thinking of BenQ DW1655 because it seems to receive a lot of support from people in this forum. But, I am worried that my system may be too slow to support DVD burning.

My system is:
P3 700Mhz
512MB Physical RAM

Can somebody tell me whether my system is suitable for DVD burning? If my system is unable to support BenQ DW1655, can somebody suggest another model that will work well with my system? Thanks!

Re: System Requirements

Hi and welcome to the forum

Can you check in device manager if your mainboard support DMA?

DMA is a must for DVD burning, and if your mobo don't support this, you need a new computer

Re: System Requirements

Hi,

if that machine isn't totally crap, PIII systems support DMA mode. But it might be possible, that it isn't fast enough to provide the data rate needed for 16x writing.

But if it isn't fast enough for 16x writing (and it might be), then it can still burn at 12x or lower speed with the BenQ 1655 or any other DVD burner.

The limiting factor is probably the speed of the harddrive and the free space on that harddrive.

Thanks geno888, michael, and DrageMester for the prompt reply!
Yes, my mainboard does support DMA.

How much free space do you advise me to free up on my hard drive?
I am using a 120gig Maxtor HDD. I dont know whether it is 5400 or 7200 rpm though and I have no idea how to check.

Re: System Requirements

what motherboard do you have?? if you have intel 810 or 815 chipset then it is more than sufficient, I am sure you have intel 810 or 815 equivalent motherboard. And your board should be equipped with either ultra66 or ultra100 IDE controllers. Your HDD is more likely to be 7200 rpm since it is that big. I cant remember any 5400 HDD drive having that big of storage capacity except the samsung. You have the green light, go get yourself a BenQ 1655, good choice and good luck

Unless your HD is nearly full you probably needn't worry.
To backup movies you should have a minimum of 10 GB
with 20 GB being better.

i810 is rather slow, with shared VGA as additional bottleneck. i815 is fine, also VIA 694X.

Re: System Requirements

i cant remember what motherboard i have... i dont know how to check and i am lazy to check...

i couldn't find the BenQ 1655 so i bought BenQ1625 instead, it works pretty well and i managed to burn 2 DVDs last night using MCC004(Verbatim) media! each DVD was only 2.3GB(i couldn't squeeze my files into 1 DVD) and i kept 5GB free space in my HD.

thanks everybody!
