System Hang running cdrdao

Hi,

I am looking for a bit of help with a problem here.

I have a BenQ LS DW 1655 DVD writer installed. It has been running fine, ripping DVD's, but today I gave it a audio CD and tried to run
Code:
cdrdao read-cd
or
Code:
cdrdao read-toc
and the whole system locked up. This is completely reproducable. I also tried with generic and generic raw drivers without luck. Has anyone else come across this problem. It also reacts the same when using a GUI that calls upon cdrao (such as k3b).

I checked out the IDE bus was all set up ok and tried it without another device on the chain, still no joy. The old teac cd writer works fine with the same commands as does the Dell, so I am pretty sure it's something with the Benq. It is not directly supported by cdrdao, but neither are the others, they are all running on generic drivers.

thanks

Re: System Hang running cdrdao

It's a rare sytem related bug that occasionally causes a total system freeze when cdrdao is used to read some multi-tracked cds (e.g. standard audio cds). On an affected system, whilst it won't occur with every multi-tracked cd, it will do so with most of them and if it does so with a particular cd, it will do so on every occasion that you attempt to read that cd.

It is somewhat more prevalent with win9x systems but occasionally occurs with win2k/xp systems too.

I'm familiar with it because my old win98 system used to suffer from the problem when using burnatonce which is, for the most part a gui for cdrdao and mkisofs.

Insofar as burnatonce is concerned, its programmer, jamieo, corrected the problem for me and, if using burnatonce, the problem is eliminated by checking the Simple Toc option in the program settings.

Unfortunately, I no longer recall the specific command line switches necessary but you can probably figure them out from the burnatonce .ini or .log files if you check the Simple Toc option and then read an audio cd.

If not, then I suggest that you contact jamieo who can certainly tell you the necessary command line switches. (If you do so, give him my regards. )
