Say Benq ! How ?

Hi all,

I can write that I'm a new and proud owner of a Benq 1620.
However, I'm not sure how to say it.

How do you guys say it in English or Korean ?

BENK ? BENG CUE ?

Thanks for a clarification !

I think it's "Bink" and possibly named after the tiny, desperate, noises it makes when you put in most -R media???

It's Ben + Q here in South Korea. The company's name is officially BenQ, not Benq or Beng or Bank.

Since more people are expressing interest in BenQ, here's a brief company history.

Throughout its development from a simple vendor of peripherals into a large group enterprise, Benq Corp. has sought to upgrade its technological capabilities and transform its product line. As the leader of the Benq Group, Benq Corp. zeroes in on market opportunities and sets the R&D wheels in motion to cAcer CMtalize on those opportunities. Benq Corp.'s stable of star products includes LCD monitors, CD ReWriters, mobile phones, digital projectors, high-end scanners and printers. In Commonwealth magazine's 1999 list of the Top 1,000 Large Enterprises, Acer CM ranked 23rd, drawing on manufacturing resources in Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and Mexico.

I pronounce it "benk" ... (like the French "cinq") ...

As for how it's pronounced in Korean... that may not matter. Nikon in North America has a long i (nye kon) but in Japan it's Nee kon.

I asked, international-techie like , for a BENG-Q at a Darty store and was well and respectfully served.
Who said the French are lacking in language skills ?

OTH, if the Koreans say Ben-Q, then I'm sure the Taiwanese do too. Thanks Kenshin.

Yeah, my first burner was a 2X Acer CD-RW.

Re: Say Benq ! How ?

That's true, but people mispronounce Hyundai, too. (I'm not saying you're wrong - I really don't know I might be.) People say Hy - UN - day or Hy - UN - die and it's actually HUN day (like Sunday; the y is silent in Hyundai). I'm sure the people who regularly deal with BenQ are used to it being said many different ways

Re: Say Benq ! How ?

I wonder how many sales they loose because people are too embarrassed to demonstrate they don't know how to pronounce the name to the shop assistant...

"Hey, get me a Ben.. Be.. er Pioneer"

BTW The pronunciation of Liteon isn't completely obvious either, and a few weeks ago I even got a blank look from somebody when I said 'NEC' (EN-EE-SEA), only to see a look of enlightenment appear on their face a second later with their asking "oh, you mean 'Neck'"...

What is it with drive manufacturers and their choice of company name?

Re: Say Benq ! How ?

Acer is no easier to guess for the right pronunciation. It's very different depending you're Latin native or Anglo-Saxon .

Mitsubishi MKM is wiser choosing to be named Verbatim outside Japan.

In emerging (or emerged as Taiwan and Korea are) countries, QC (quality control), QA (quality Assurance) etc. are the daily subjects of discussion in manufacturing and exports businesses.

It matters even if sometimes Hyundai and Samsung are pronounced differently in South Korea and in the US. What's spoken in Taiwan is more likely to be pronounced similarly in South Korea than in the US and I'm rather closer to the places than most public in SK. Dai in Hyundai is pronounced like shadow and apple, but a bit stronger and longer because the Dai is Tai in Taiwan meaning big, large, great, etc. There is no clear difference in pronunciation between "benk" and "bank" when spoken in East Asia. It's not the same as US people pronouncing Hyundai as "hyun + dye" which is just correct for English speakers in the US. I also pronounce so sometimes just to let people in SK accept the fact there are different worlds outside whose pronunciations of the same words may not be wrong only because they differ. Pronoucing aye is also easier than ae for some people.

My name is Kenny beacause most people in the US are not comfortable at pronouncing Shin Gyoung Hoon.

As for Lite-On, it's Lite-On IT. Some people who are not good at English but still import drives from Lite-On IT call it "light on it" as if the "it" has any meaning. Lite-On and Lite-On IT are different companies under Lite-On group just as Samsung and Samsung Electronics are different though under the same Samsung group.

Mitsubishi MKM is Mitsubishi Hwa Hak Mae Che which is Mitsubishi Kagaku Media which is Mitsubisi Chemical Media. When East Asia becomes a litlte more self-affluent, they will be all spelled both in Roman alphabet and Chinese characters at once. As South Korean and other countries need to export to US to survive as nations, they had to rename Sun Gyung to SKC and Gum Sung to Goldstar and then to LG. Samsung didn't change because the founders didn't choose to but has been still successful.

@MacClipper

Samsung was originally a poor fisher. Hyundai started from a local farmer. LG made soap in a war-time South Korea. All important Japanese business groups also have somewhat modest origins.

I also had three Acer CD writers.

NEC, either N. E. C. or nec.

http://www.nec.co.jp/profile/

NEC = Nippon Electric = 日本電気株式会社 = 일본전기주식회사

There's also a Ben in the Living Room forum.

BenQ originally had a plan to release DW1650 in October.

There was no offence intended by my last posting, just in case anybody from Korea or Taiwan feels upset...

I enjoy asian lanugages and in fact speak a reasonable amount of Thai and some Vietnamese having previously lived in both countries (a very different part of Asia, but I hope it shows my good intentions)

To be honest I suspect Anglophones like myself have never quite adjusted to the fact that electronic devices are no longer manufactured by companies with names like Pye, Ferguson, Bush (no relation), Grundig etc

Thanks for the background info Kenshin... interesting!
