Well, since Ritek is making it, it varies alot in quality. I've seen many good results with Ricoh media, and some bad ones. Looks like you got one of the bad batches.

I think you should try and get an exchange through Amazon or Ricoh.

It's the discs. Out of 50 of those discs 10 of them are coasters. I am on the second box now and already a few of them are coasters. BTW those discs don't even reach 16x. Sometimes I get 8x and sometimes 12x max.

Re: Ricoh 16x DVD+R now crap?

I bought 3 spindles of these and all were crap. I exchanged them for three more and still 2 out of 3 spindles were crap. In the end, I returned them all for a second time and exchanged them for Verbatims which have been excellent. In future, I will only buy Verbs or TY.

This seems to be a more recent phenomenon. RICOHJPNR01 was made by Ritek as well but that media was much more consistent in my experience.

My LiteOn drives both loved Ricoh discs, but both my BenQ drives prefer Verbatim (MCC) discs.

Jackie278,

Have you tried any of the later firmwares (latest is BSOB)?

However, it seems that Ricoh's quality may well have deteriorated.

Yeah. I have some awesome RICOHJPNR01. The time when Ricoh started sucking really coinsided with when Ritek took a turn for the worst.

Re: Ricoh 16x DVD+R now crap?

Hmm I would recommend contacting RICOH while RICOH media has become quite variable a fall out rate of 10 disc's on 50 is not normal for ricoh branded media.
If Ricoh is really selling the quality like they suggested in the cdfreaks article then they should find some way of fixing it. If not then why should we use there media and pay higher prices. When there oem's which use the media with there codes which are just as bad but are cheaper.
Last time RICOH suggested that quality of some of these was lower so let them now proof by having higher standards because these oem brands come with no waranty or guarantee when it comes to quality.

Hi,

thanks for all your answers, I am a bit confused now, since some people tell me that MBI is making discs for Ricoh, others say it's Ritek. Do you have any source of information, which is true? Ricoh always used to be a reliable source for optical media for me up to now, I'd really regret if they had really turned to the "dark side" now

cu,

Jackie

Have you tried disabling Solidburn (and I suppose clearing learnt entries) ? On my 1655 SB+RITEKF1 = no burn at all.. Without it scans are acceptable (score 97)

Re: Ricoh 16x DVD+R now crap?

The R03 quality is variable.
Both disks burnt at 12X, but one had trouble getting there.
default settings.

Re: Ricoh 16x DVD+R now crap?

I am better off doing 12X on R01, which is impossible to find these days.

Probably a bad batch of media. I've had only good burns with the R03s on a DW1640, at 12x. [16x +R burns by DW1640 have more PIFs after 3 GB.]

I still have a couple of the R01 left but I didn't use it because the 1640 only allows 4x burning with those. Since I returned the 1640 and now have 1655 I will see if it will allow 12x burning. Scans coming up.

Strange, because I don't have any problems burning RICOHJPN-R01 at 12x and with some "voodoo" they even burn at 16x on my 1640.

I don't think your 1655 will burn this media any faster than 4x with default settings.

BTW, European users can find Datawrite branded R01's at nierle.de

1655's default strategy is indeed limited to 4x, but with SolidBurn and OverSpeed it has no problem doing R01 at 12x.

Got it to go at 8x but scans aren't that great.
