chris555,
When you flashed tp B7P9, did you receive a "flash completed successfully message?" "Please reboot system or restart your USB DVD device?"
If you did, I would imagine all is well.
Especially if you can run QScan.
The Memorex media you are using may be incapable of faster speeds in your BenQ 1620 due to media quality. Try some Tayo Yuden 000 T02 DVD+R sold as Fugi 8X DVD+R made in Japan. Or some RicohjpnR01 or R02's sometimes sold as Ridata 4X, which will write well as 8X.

Check this 12X External USB BenQ DW1620 B7P9 Burn & scan on Yuden T02:

Re: problems flashing

Hi chris555,

I believe that QScan version 1.0 is overly conservative in its maximum burn speed recommendations. The fact that QScan runs on your drive and suggests a speed range means that your firmware conversion went fine.

For further confirmation, complete your burn at the maximum speed, and then run CDSpeed to test the burn.

http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html

One of the first things I'd suggest you do is to change CDSpeed from the default "Legacy" colour theme to the "Bright" theme, since the default black-background colour scheme is a bit difficult to read. You can access this via the "File->Options" menu and then via the "Disc Quality" tab along the left. In the "Colors" box, along the bottom-right, you will find a pulldown box labelled "Theme:". Select your new theme and click OK.

To do a quality test of your disc, you choose the "Extra->Disc Quality Test" menu item and then click the Start button in the upper-right.

To read the CDSpeed results, you need to look at the numbers along the left axis for both the top (PI Errors) and the bottom (PI Failures) graphs. Errors are normal for DVD burning - there is hardware logic in all DVD readers that will automatically correct these errors and guarantee data integrity (provided they are not exceedingly bad). You can think of the top graph (PI Errors) as being your first line of defense against errors and the bottom graph (PI Failures) as being your second line of defense against errors. Near the bottom-right you have a "PO Failures:" box. Any count other than zero in this "PO Failures:" box means that you have a bad disc.

Your "PI Failures" on the bottom graph should stay in the green <= 16 and should NOT go into the orange for a good burn. I like to see the "PI Errors" (top graph) all below 25 and definitely below 100, although this is not anywhere near as critical as the the "PI Failures" (bottom graph) is.

Hope some of this is useful.

Re: problems flashing

One last thing - it seems that I was perhaps not specific enough in my above link - you want version 3.55 of Nero CD Speed (that's the latest version).
