Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

I got my first BenQ 1655 about 2 weeks ago from NewEgg and installed it fine. I tried to burn some CDRs as a test to make sure it worked, to no avail. I figured the drive was bad, so I RMAed it. Just got the 2nd unit, installed it, and same thing, it will not burn CDRs using either Nero 6.6 or WinXP burning data disc. The media is (according to Nero):
Manufacturer : Taiyo Yuden
Code : 97m24s01f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 1: Long Strategy (Cyanine, AZO)
Recording Speed : n/a
Capacity : 79:59.72
703 MB
Additional Capacity : n/a
Overburn Capacity : not tested

So, I went and grabbed some CDRs from my parents, Phillips CDRs, and it worked fine.

Why on earth wouldn't it burn with high quality TY CDRs? anyone else have problems? Anyway to resolve this? I have a cake box of probably 40 more of these TY discs.

They worked fine in my other Liteon 812.

I'm using the latest firmware.
Thanks.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

I'm using Nero express 6.6.0.14 (came with the drive), there are no updates for it on the nero.com.
I've also tried the built in WinXP data burning, which is great for create data CDs (like backing up photos). Neither work with the TY discs.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

The newest version of Nero is 6.6.1.4.
TY should be fine...no probs here....Maybe kind of "fake" media (or does that only exist on DVD-Rs ?)

Hi
Welcome to the forum KevinSanDiego.
You should update your Nero first. If you want you could try this BenQs' oem version of Nero which is more recent than your current version. Otherwise go here for the latest version of Nero.

Kevin, the log shows that DMA is off on other drives (incl. harddrive) and that might cause the problem.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

Thanks. My hard drive is SATA, not on an IDE channel.
BenQ is primary master, and is UDMA mode 2. My toshiba DVD rom has 'DMA if available' selected, but is using PIO. It's an older drive, but I'll unplug it and see if it does anything. Again, other CDRs burn fine (Phillips CDRs), it's just an issue with these TY discs.

You should also check master/slave settings, many Benq drives are set as slave as default.

What you mean with that?
It could cause problems with that media, if so then
I've used my BenQ's in different ways primary master/slave, secondary master/slave and no problems with Taiyo Yuden cd-r's.

My drive, connected as secondary slave (master is my LG), works fine, too. Maybe he has bought fake media...

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

What is the brand of your TY media? Is it Made in Japan?
It might be a bad batch since there's a medium (media) error in the log.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

Most probably a media issue. If 2 different units can't write the same media, I first check the media by trying to burning it in another burner...

Have you tried that?

He said they worked fine in his Liteon 812 in the initial post. As others have asked, what's the 'brand' of the discs? Unless you knowingly and intentionally bought TY, I'm suspecting they are fakes.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

yeah, they work fine in my Liteon 812.

they aren't a rebadged brand, like verbatim. I bought them online, don't remember where, as TY discs in a cake box.

Fakes?? even though they show in Nero as:
Manufacturer : Taiyo Yuden
Code : 97m24s01f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 1: Long Strategy (Cyanine, AZO)

??

can you recommend some discs for me?

Thanks for all of the replies.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

Some DVD and CD media is 'faked', they use a faked media code such as TY so that they are 'seen' as being TY, even if they're something entirely different in reality. Someone else may be able to confirm whether they are real TY or not buy the serial number data stamped on the inner part of the discs. If you bought from a well-known retailer and they advertised them as TY, they're almost certainly real TY media. If you ordered from some shady company, who knows. Real TY is very good media and if yours are real, it may not be the media to blame. Others like Ritek, although I can say I've honestly had no issues with any CD media except extremely cheap media like Plasmon. Ritek, CMC, MBI, and others have all worked fine for me.

You are burning at 48X. Try burning at 16X or lower.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Thanks Tedtalker. they burned at 16x, and 24x, and 40x, and now for some reason, 48x. I have no explanation for this. I used Nero, and also used the built in Win XP burning data CD. works fine. I'm completely baffled. maybe the burner just needed to 'get warmed up'. I'll keep monitoring.

Thanks all.

If the drive would be connected wrong you'd have definetely some startup/booting problems and the drive wouldn't be recognized.

Re: Problem with new BenQ 1655 and TY CDRs

my DW1640 doesnt like Taiyo Yuden CD-R's either, and yes mine are definitely genuine Taiyo Yuden CD-R's. They burn fine in my stand alone CD writer, but sometimes my BenQ drive wont even recognize them. I've used other CD-R's fine with my BenQ drive, though (HP CMC Magnetics, and Ritek) with no problems.
