Philips DVD8801 read inconsistency

I have a Dell that has a Philips DVD8801 re-writer but for some reason it will not recognize a finalized DVD-RW disc made with my TV-based Panasonic DVD-recorder. It will however recognise DVD+RW and DVD-R discs recorded with the same Panasonic recorder. Additionally I have used the same DVD-RW discs on the Dell to read and write data. I called Dell TS and they say there is no reason why it should not recognise DVD-RW video and that a firmware update is unnecessary. Any ideas?
TIA
Paul
