Philips 8X CD Recorder Firmware Updates

I've checked out the philips support page and can't find any firmware upgrades/updates.

I have a Philips 8X drive, the exact model number i don't have on hand and am too lazy to get .

Anyhow, the drive was the same one issued with Compaq Presario 5012US models. It died recently.
WEll, not entirely. It works but doesn't work and messes up the ide controller it is on. So if on primary, any other devices won't register/work properly if on secondary, same story.

I'm about ready to ditch this drive but was wondering if anyone has any firmware updates I might try before trashing it?
Thanks

I'm looking for EXTREME affordability without sacrifice quality, by quality I'm mean I'd strongly consider the cheap-o generics so long as there aren't reports of MEDIA INCOMPTABILITIES or HIGH DRIVE FAILURE RATES, etc?

Are the generics a pretty safe bet?

PCRW804K

I own a PCRW804K and it has always worked well for me, given I have my software tuned up correctly. Firmware 2,5 works well, recognizing more media. You might want to look at Lite-On drives, though. They are inexpensive and perform well. Also available as CenDyne drives at Office Max and others.
