| NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn Well I finally received my DW1640 from newegg today. Oem model made in August 2005 with BSHB firmware. I had enough time to pull out the old cd/rw, replace the IDE cable with a new round 40/80 one and pop in the new drive and update the firmware to BSLB. I went ahead and did a DL burn using 1clickdvd, since it's all I have that will do DL. I was hoping with the addition of a second DVD drive I would be able to burn on the fly and cut the burn time in half, but no such luck! lol Haven't had any time to adjust any settings or do much reading and I'm only a few days into the cdfreaks world, so don't flame too bad. I was just itching to get into the swing of things and finally have something to post. I gather the above results are not exceptional or even acceptable? I'm assuming it's due to the lack of settings adjustments or incorrect scan settings? I promise I'll start reading when I get to work! Feel free to offer any advice for a newb, I'm an open slate! |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn That is a really nice burn! Do you know at what speed, or perhaps the burn time? @rolling, with current Nero CD-DVD Speed, setting the read speed to max will scan at 8x on Benq drives. You can also see the green line max-ed at 8x.

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn It was burned with 1clickdvd so I assume the speed was the same as the media, 2.4x? There's no option, I know of, to change burn speed with 1click. Burn time was 38 minutes, which was still an improvement from what it used to be. Surely there has to be a product that burns on the fly? That's the whole reason I wanted a second drive, to avoid going from disk to hard drive temp file and back to disk. I even messed around with copytodvd before leaving for work and dern if it didn't use a hard disk temp file as well. It did give me the option of choosing burn speed up to 8x though, so it would at least be quicker. I ran a disk check on a blank DL with Qsuite at 8x first and it said 8x on that media was not a good idea! lol I did have a chance to double check booktypes, all where already set to DVD-ROM. Havn't had time to check anything else in Qsuite. Wish someone would make a noobs guide! |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn Yeah, 2.4 x burn Then. Great burn though. Very low PIE and decent PIF. You've got a good drive there. ![]() Those disks will burn in your drive, with Nero, DVDDecrypter, etc. at 8x, should you desire. Excellent! |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn Will having several different burning apps cause any problems, or will they all get along? lol I already have easy media creator 7.5, 1clickdvd, copytodvd and a nero disk that came with the drive. I aint getting rid of easy media after paying what I did for it, so don't even say it! |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn IMO, it's not safe to burn MKM001 @8x given media and drive variability. But I hate waiting 40 mins @2.4x compares to 15-18 mins @8x. Maybe if MKM003 (8x rated) is officially out with the same price as current MKM001 we can safely burn @8x without having to much worry. Pic shows Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x rated speed (MKM003) burned with a BenQ based drive @8x very nicely, with error level the same as single layer dvds. The speed drop to 6x at 2nd layer is because firmware issue.

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn The scanner is Lite-On 1693S which has a scanning interval of 1ECC, thus max PIF of 3 equals to 93 quality score. For reference: 1ECC vs 8ECC Quality score table. This BenQ based drive cannot do quality scan. You will know very soon. ![]()

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn Had time for a second shot. This time burned at 4x, using easy media creator 7.5! Burn time was only 9 minutes quicker, was it really worth it? And no I still haven't had time to figure out how to read these thing past the final number! lol I'll try 6x and 8x next, wth! I thought I saw some 6x dl media somewhere, may have to grab some. |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn Sorry to hear that, I didn't have any problems. Here's my 1st attempt at an 8x dl burn. Not too shabby! Burn time down to around 23 minutes, so I'd say it was worth any loss in quality, but was there any? lol Now if I could just find a guide to tweak my Qsuite settings, Id be all set. |

| Re: NEW DW1640 1st DL Burn SolidBurn doesn't support DL media, so only variables are WOPC and speed. Considering I can buy 50 SL Verbatims for what 3 or 4 DL discs cost I'm having a hard time justifying the expense. So I have no first hand experience with them. But based on scans I've seen here and other places I'd say 4x is pretty safe. WOPC, well I think the jury is still out on that one.Q. |

Based on my experience so far, WOPC is staying off... The two burns that completed play flawlessly in an old Panasonic standalone and a Philips DVP 642. An older Pioneer DV-37 ES (very high end at the time) freezes at the layer break but otherwise has no issues. You can fast forward or rewind, through the layer break or jump to 1 sec past it with no issues. A Philips 985 +R DVD recorder just says "no disc" and a Playstation 2 V11 (slimline) has freezes in most areas I checked. Mike | |
