The speeds I just gave you were not for ripping but for fast reading in DVD Shrink. When ripping the non problem disc the rip speed starts at 4X, very quickly rises, and tops out above 14X with a DL disc. This is what it should do; there are no problems in the hardware. The problem here has to be in these discs. They seem to slow down every drive I have other than the AOpen. All the drives work as expected but with these two discs. I initially blamed the discs for problems, some kind of error in pressing, were it not that the AOpen sees none. I would suspect some kind of write scheme except everyone cries "NEW COPY PROTECTION" and I don't want to be one of those people.

As this problem does not seem to be related to your speed hack I am going to redirect the question over to another forum as it is possible it is something new. Thanks again.

That is where I noticed the problem first. I was just running DVD Shrink to measure a fast read on the disc. If you want more details, I have moved this here:http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=136000

as it is not really a speed hack problem since it seems to affect 3 out of 4 of my drives.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

Any fix for the B8V9 DW1610 firmware? I can confirm the speed settings do not work on this firmare but work fine on the B8T9 version (currently using).

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

Be more precise. What exactly does not work ? It would not surprise me if overspeeding 4x -R media does not work anymore, as this is a known problem with the 1620 B7U9 and B7V9.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit V1.0.4.11 is out

Thanks ala42 .... the increased speed option for Benq drives works great.

It fits very well with the way the drive is designed. The benq will automaticly slow the drive down whenever full speed isn't needed (say for watching DVDs or divx files on a DVD-R disk) and speeds up for ripping and copying.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

I just flashed my BenQ 1625 with the BBFA firmware (figure 1). According to MCSE 1.0.4.11 the RICOHJPN R02 should burn at 12x (figure 2).
But when checking the media with DVDInfo 3.55 it only can burn at highest speed 8x (figure 3).
What am I doing wrong?

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

I have replaced the RICOHJPN R02 code with the RICOHJPN R03 code. When now checking I got the following speeds 16x,8x,4x,2.4x. This is different from what you can see above in fugure 2. It should be 16x,12x,8x,4x.
What's happening here.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

thanks for making MediaCodeSpeedEdit available

using 1620 with b7v9 firmware
after doing "increase reading speed" patch, i tried to rip video dvd dl disk, and it started @ 1.5x & finished @ little less than 3.2x (phantom of opera 2004) i used dvd decrypter

nero cd/dvd speed also reported same transfer rate; however, when i did the quality scan using nero cd/dvd speed, it started @ 3.5x & went up to 8x

is this normal or am i doing something wrong.

i just cannot stand fbi warnings & other stuffs showing before i can play movies, so please help me out if there is a way to increase ripping speed. (house of dagger was fast though)

thanks

ps i know there is an known issue with new dvd dl video disks, but i am not sure how i can decrease the ripping speed.

Try the same tests on the original firmware without the read speed patch. You are not the first who reports scans starting at 1.5x, but this is not releated to the read speed patch.

Check again with DVD Identifier and nero cdspeed.

With nero CDSpeed it says 2.4X-16X so the same thing I was telling you about.

RICOHJPN R02 (with RICOHJPN R03 write strategy, all speeds) media in BenQ 1625:

Can you check how a +R media already supported at 16x write speed and RICOHR02@this16xMID behave ?

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

At the momemt I have only the ricohjpnr02 and yuden000t02 media. Both are original 8x speed media. But I can burn a ricoh at 16x....
But still I don't get the correct speeds following the write strategy from the firmware.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

ala42,

thanks for your support

well, with the official unpatched firmware burnt, it started 2x & finsiehd @ 3x i guess increase reading speed did something even for this dl disk, but average was about same.

there must be another lock that prevent drive from reading it faster as nero cd/dvd quality scan could read from 4x through little more than 8x

again, thanks ala42 for your excellent support

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

shimman ... try some different disks.

The benq will occasionally decide that it will not read a certain disk fast, regardless of patching.

Spending forever trying to get the 1 or 2 dvds that the benq doesn't want to read at full speed reading quicker seems dumb.

How can I increase DVD+RW burning speed?

Hi. ala42.

Thank you for the great program MCSE...

I have a question.

How can I increase DVD+RW burning speed?

I have a Benq 1620 pro with B7U9. And try change RICOH +RW 2.4X to 4X, but it dosn't work.

I can write it only 2.4X.(I tested that formatted/not formatted media)

Is it a "Known Bug" or "Known Limitation"?

Thank you again.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

Looks like I have found the write lock for 4x -R media in B7U9/B7V9. Someone online who could run a test on it ?

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V1.0.4.13 is out

While digging inside the Benq 1640 firmware for the -R write speed infos I found something interesting, which led me to the 4x -R write lock of the current 16xx firmwares. So now you can burn your 4x TYG01@16x if you dare with B7V9 as you could before with B7T9.
Code:
Changelog

1.0.4.13 09 May 2005
        - removed firmware write lock for 4x DVD-R media on several newer
          Benq firmwares: 1610 B8V9, 1620 B7U9/V9, 1625 BBEA/FA
        - added experimental support for BENQ 1640 BSGB having some restrictions
            - no +RW/-R speed display
            - no lossless strategy swapping yet, so changing a write strategy
              removes the target strategy
Download Changelog

Thanks ala42. You're the main man.

I was able to burn one of my last precious TYG02s at 12X. But for some reason it took 7:30 minutes.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

I reflashed back with the BBEA .cvt file but still I have 2.4X-8X on the YUDEN000 T02 media. Strange because it should not be happening.

In the beginning I have tried to modify the BBFA fimware with he 'MediaCodeSpeedEdit' 1.0.4.11 from ala42 but that didn't work the way I wanted with the YUDEN000 T02 media and after that the drive is stuck on 2.4X-8X speed for this media. So I think that the MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool did something wrong with the firmware that I flashed after that.
