Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

It is not supported in the released version. Do you volunteer to test it on your drive for the first time ?

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.0.4.5 is out

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.0.4.5 is out. "Matches more drives" .

Adds Benq 1625 type drive and first Cyberhome DX162D-A support.
If you also have a LG 4163 drive, have a look here.

Code:
1.0.4.5 10 Apr 2005
        - added support for LG 4163 A104, thanks to TDB, Dee-27 and delta123
        - added support for Cyberhome DX162D-A 140F, thanks to TDB and ccbadd
changing the write strategy does not seam to work for some +R media
speed reducing is not implemented yet
        - added support for 1625 family: BENQ DW1625 BBEA, HP 640c ES04,
          PHILIPS 16LS P1.5
including lossless strategy swapping and read speed patch
        - added support for Liteon 852 PSX3
        - read speed patch for 822 B3LC is now also in the released version
        - added auto rename feature used when no lossless strategy swapping
is supported and list entries are double clicked

ala42, is there a working link to download the latest (1.0.4.6) version...?

All links still point at MCSE v.1.0.4.4.

Sorry, yes I know it's late.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

Thanks ala42, I got my copy of MCSE 1.0.4.6 earlier today.

Been running on Philips LS16 firmware P1.5 for a few days so I was curious about write strategies and max speeds of some media I tested.
Here is list of supported media and speeds.

I know we can trust your "speed list", but still I have some doubts about two very common media types; Ricoh-R02 and Yuden-T02.
According to your list these should be able to burn at 12x on stock firmware. All I can get is 8x max...
Checked with latest DVD Identifier, CD/DVD Speed, Nero 6.6.0.5 and DVD Decrypter, all gave the same information.
Can somebody with "real" Philips LS16 confirm or shed light upon this? If so please post here.

Speedpatching above media with ala42´s latest MCSE worked like a charm...
Read speed patch is also working flawlessly.

Did the burns of the speedpatched disks work at 16x speed ?

Yes they did.
Interestingly, the lead-in and lead-out when burning at 16x was very short... but then I also played around with other "tools" and I'm not quite sure what caused this.
At 8x burning (stock f/w) lead-out was looong as "normal".

Note also, no extra spin-up after pushing eject button.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

I have a HP 640i crossflashed with the Phillips Firmware and Im getting 16X read speeds with Nero CD speed with Sony +RW disks .

The Phillips ,BenQ and HP lightscribe drives are all Ben Q 1625 based drives at the moment the Phillips drive has a customised front panel with a led that chages colour when its performing write, read funtions .The HP 640i (c) is a Ben Q 1625 with a HP badge .

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

I have read that some drives with extremely fast read speeds (e.g. the AOpen reader) do so at the expense of disabling error correction, meaning that you might get bit errors in the ripped file. Does anyone know if the "increase read speed" option on the BenQ 1620 is as reliable as reading a disc at the default speed?

This sounds like pure nonsense. Do you have a source for this joke ?

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

With Ala's Speed Edit Ive tried all 3 firmwares availible for the HP 640i (RPC1 of course) and they all seem to get simmilar results in nero CD Speed .This stands to reason of course as the Phillips and HP Lightscribe drives are currently based on the Ben Q 1625 .

With that said Im going back to the speed edited HP firmware till the Lightscribe speed is upgraded to 2x in July this year and media speeds are increased .
Anyone got any better results with using different firmware for Lightscribe drives ?

Never mind. I looked up the source article and it appears that the problem is specific to a particular drive (AOpen 1648) and only when it is used in a specific way. Sorry for the confusion!

This is a general problem and not related to the changes made by MCSE.
I have always wonder why the BenQ flashers seemingly leave the IDE bus always active ie. after doing a flash, the IDE activity LED is always lit until a reboot is done. Irritates me enough to do a reboot - I use S3 sleep so reboots are otherwise rather rare on my PC.

The next time, I am going to try the disable/enable manoeveur to see this will get rid of the always on IDE LED.

to Ala42,
Benq has brought out Firmware B7V9 for BENQ 1620
http://support.benq.com/files/storag...W1620/B7V9.zip

But when i try to open it with MCSE 1.0.4.6 I am missing all the +R writing strategies. Is BENQ trying to prevent us patching??

No, I am . This is just a savety precaution. I have to make a critical patch to a firmware part used at firmware startup to allow changing the +R tables, which could lead to dead drives if some firmware internals change. I test each new firmware release initially on my drive to make shure that this patch is safe before I enable it in MCSE for public use.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Benq/Philips DVD-Writers

So if I understand it correctly, it is a safety precaution in MCSE that you implemented, not something inside the firmware ?
Which then leads to that the +R write strategies are not displayed...

But if the +R strategies are not displayed, one still could apply the speedpatch while NOT touching any of the write strategies ?
So only the speedpatch is being applied, then the firmware should work or do I miss a clue here ?
This implies that the +R strategies are not touched as well..

Ala42 if u would comment on that, just to take my confusion away a bit...
Thanks

Yes, you can apply readspeed patch to B7V9 firmware as it stands now...

Right.

Right. The +R tables are a bit special, it took a while to get them readable. The critical patch makes them readable and patch friendly. To reduce the risk, I have taken several safety precautions. One of them is to enable this patch only on known and tested firmwares.

You could also change some of the displayed media codes.

It should and even does
Quote:

Right, you can not touch non displayed strategies.
