Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

From what I have seen, a 640i has the eject hole on the left and is a Liteon, a 640c has the eject hole in the middle of the drive and is a Benq. There is also a 640b...

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

The HP640I definitely looks like a Lite-On from the front. The 640 posted by RickDriver is obviously a BenQ by the way the front looks at least.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

i = internal and is just the selling name for all internal drives and not the actual drive ID. For example HP sold its 4x internal DVD+R/RW writer as dvd300i but it could have either a drive ID of 300n = NEC or 300c = Philips.

Proshow list support for the following HP DVD writers (I added the OEM):
DVD Writer 640c = Philips/BenQ
DVD Writer 640b = HLDS?
DVD Writer 630c = Philips/BenQ
DVD Writer 530r = Lite-On
DVD Writer 420n = NEC
DVD Writer 400c = Philips/BenQ
DVD Writer 300n = NEC
DVD Writer 300c = Philips
DVD Writer 200j = Ricoh
DVD Writer 100j = Ricoh

I'm not sure the 640b is a LG but I believe HP cd writers that ended with b in the drive ID were LG drives. While the picture at HP of the dvd640i shows a Lite-On it does not necessarily mean that any dvd640 drives will be Lite-On drives because HP's picture of the dvd630i also shows a Lite-On drive (and all sold drives are AFAIK BenQs) and HP's picture of the dvd420i shows a BenQ drive (while all sold drives AFAIK are NECs)...

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Buying one of these sounds like you might just get about anything!

I also noticed that the specs sometimes showed 8X dvd-r or 16X dvd-r. Hmm, what to make of that.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Actually the picture of the drive Rickdriver posted may be the face plate for the BenQ and the picture dsdarli posted the Lite-On faceplate.

If you take a look at this sites CeBit coverage they were at a HP Lite-On stand and the 640I was on display but checking out the sticker on the drive it said BenQ oops! & the faceplate corresponds to the one Rickdriver posted, anyone have a 640I with the other faceplate and is able to confirm its a Lite-On ?

Right. I bought a HP640i, the label says HP640i but BIOS and Windows say its HP640c. I also find a label with "BenQ" on top of it.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Dont think there is a DW1625 number on it, only the name BenQ. But this is enough to know it is a BenQ 1625 or Philips LS16

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

If it says BenQ on the label odds are its not a Lite-On

The HP 640I BenQ firmware version should be CS30 but there are no firmware upgrades available at this time or a means to cross flash it to a BenQ 1625 that I'm aware of.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Well, at least they sound like they are BenQ's then and not the inferior Lite-On Drives. Hmmmm, so any of you 640I owners try the Lightscribe capabilities yet to see how it works? I'm quite curious on this aspect. My Sharpie writing sucks but it works for the time being... hehe.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

I also wanted a Lightscribe drive.
So I had to decide between buying a Benq1625 on ebay (89€+5€p&p) and wait a a few days until payment arrives at seller and package arrives at my home or to buy a HP640i at a local retail store (90€) at once.
So I went to the local store and asked for having a look at the drive.
As the bezel exactly looked like my 1620s bezel and there was a label with the word "Benq" on the drive I made the decision to get the HP in hope that it will become crossflashable to the Benq 1625.
There was only Lightscribe cd-r media available so I bought me a pack of ten for 10€.
I installed the drive and here are my first results:

Drive identifies itself as hp640c.
FW is CS30.
In Nero 6608a there is no bitsetting available.
Drive is not recognized by QSuite.
In Nero's CD-speed 3.75 I'm able to start a disk quality scan but only PIEs and jitter are reported no PIFs.

I updated my Nero with the Lightscribe software and burned a disk.
I choose best mode that took over 30 minutes.
The print quality is better than in Nero's labeling software preview (especially text).
The print is sepia coloured and looks like an old photograph.
But all in all I'm very satisfied with the lightscribed disk as it will help me very well to distinguish quickly between the different disks floating around in my car's dashboard trunk

As this is my third DVD burner besides a LG 4163 (for cd-r and high quality DVD burns) and a Benq 1620pro (for overspeeding and quality control w. CD-Speed) I hope that there will be soon a FW-upgrade so that the HP will achieve the speeds of the 1620, support cd-speed, bitsetting and Qsuite and speed-up the lightscribe burns so I can replace my 1620.

My first DVD burn with HP DVD640I (HP640C/Benq clone) and Ricoh 16x DVD+R media attached.
I think the WOPC should be improved.

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Well I have only had this dvd burner (HP DVD640i LightScribe) for not even a month and for the last 4 days I have been trying to understand why it has just quite burning? I have been trying to do as much research on this as i can but I still can't understand why? Everyone still seems to be happy with theirs, or just not talking about the problems, Did I just get a bad one, or is there more to this that what I am able to find out about! Does anyone know where I can find out why I get an I/O Error every time I try to burn a dvd

Re: HP DVD640I (Benq)

Oh, I forgot to add there is a flash for it, and a lightscribe update. HP sent it to me through the email, but it didn't fix my problem and then got another "Delightful" email from them telling me to plug it in to a different computer to see if the problem continues. Well if I had another computer that wouldn't be a big deal, and if I had to money for another computer, I would just buy a new dvd drive instead of going through 4 days of headache and stress trying to find out it's problem
