I had the exact same problem a while back with a BenQ drive, but I don't remember now which BenQ drive it was (either a 1620, 1640 or a 1650/1655 drive - I've had all of these installed at one time or another).
The problem turned out to be a conflict between the motherboard's nForce IDE drivers and and an early release of the BenQ drive's firmware. I solved it by uninstalling the IDE part of the nForce drivers and then I shut the system down and reconnected the drive. The system booted fine with the native Microsoft IDE drivers installed and the drive connected.
I then updated my BenQ drive's firmware to a more current firmware version to eliminate any possible future issues. And a firmware upgrade is generally a good thing to do anyway with DVD burners.
Finally (a few weeks later), I ended up reinstalling the nForce IDE drivers, as I felt they were a bit faster than the Microsoft ones.
