Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

Another thing... try connecting the 1640 ALONE as master to the IDE port. In some cases two drives won't work together.

Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

Formatting and OS installs seem to be a favoured solution to everything, got to be Bill Gates' fault again... is the DW1640 properly recognised at POST and does it function at least as a CDROM in DOS?

Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

If it does not work in DOS as a CDROM, I don't think it will ever work in Windows so formatting and re-installing...

Probably a faulty set if you still can't get it to work in another PC, try that 1st though.

What is POST
Press "Pause" button when computer boots (and white text begins rooling on black background) then you will see if your drive is listed (recognised).

Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

Yeah, POST means Power On Self Test.
If possible, if you really want to know if the drive is faulty, best solution is to hook it up in a different PC. Ofcourse you have to find someone who is crazy enough to do this, but it's the only way to find out for sure

Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

You should still be able to load and eject regardless whether the drive is recognized by the system.. Its a basic function that it has to oblige by a manual request, pushing the button on the front of the drive.. If your drive is having problems loading and ejecting manually upon system startup I would change the power rail your using to connect it.. It may be possible that its not getting enough power, a possibility since you have quite an old system.. That also may point to your power supply..

It just could be your power supply and/or the rail your using to power that drive with.. If thats not the cause, I would say you have a bad drive and to RMA..

Re: dw1640 cannot function at all

Go to My Computer ---> Control Panel ---> System --> Device Manger ---> DVD/CD-ROM drives. Your drive should be listed... see if it is installed properly under Device status. Try "unistalling" and then rebooting which will reinstall the drive.
