DW1620(B7W9) Dual Layer Failures.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions regarding a Benq 1620 with the firmware B7W9 that fails to complete dual layer DVD+R discs. So far, all the discs have been FujiFilm DVD+R DL 2.4x discs ( RICOHJPND00 )

I've done the following things to check out the drive, and all have failed:
Disc1 - Burn 8gb ISO in Nero (v6.6.0.16): Failed at 51%
(I then searched around CD freaks and found Nero wasn't the best choice so I downloaded IMGBurn)
Disc2 - Same ISO in IMGBurn in "Test Mode": Completed ok with no errors, then did the actual burn (had to reboot first because the drive wouldn't recognize media after the test) and it failed at 50%
Disc3 - Maybe Disc2 was just bad luck: Failed at 50%
Disc4 - I tried a bunch of files totaling just under 8gb in Nero: Failed at 52% after finishing the "Generating DVD high compatibility borders" operation (While searching I found a thread where someone has the same problem, but there wasn't a solution posted, I was going to reply there, but closed the window and I can't find it now)

When I try in my DW1625 (FW: BBIA), it fails soon as the burn process is started, the disc remains blank and useable.

The end of the Nero log from Disc4 reads:

DMA is on for the drives.

The computer specs are:
WindowsXP SP2
AMD Athlon64 3200+
1 GB OCZ Platnium Rev2 RAM

The drives work nicely for all other types of media, I haven't had many failures except some Sony brand stuff at 16X (8X and slower is ok though). The rest usually works out rather well.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Sadly it's the media. These are made by Ritek and almost as bad as Riteks brand name DL's. The BENQ's and Pioneers have problems with them. I can burn them on my NEC 4550 but I would suggest you get some Verbatim DL's, they are clearly the best of the current DL offerings.

Thanks..

I've been thinking about getting some Verbatim after reading good stuff about them here. I prefer them for other media types, but the DL was a little pricey to casually check out. At least these discs were only $10 a package.

I tried out some Verbatim +R DL discs today, worked great.

Thanks.

Damn this is dissapointing. I just got home from Phoenix and found the 3 Pack of these Fuji's on sale at BB for $9.99. Got 2 of them just to try out and then read this. Guess I'll have to use them in my NEC 3500 and see if they will work there.

Re: DW1620(B7W9) Dual Layer Failures.

I picked up a BENQ 1655 today, and decided to give these discs a try again...They worked fine. I tried with random files to fill the disc up, I'll have to try a PS2 backup or something later and see if it's useable.
