Do I need to return my drive?

I have a retail internal BENQ 1620. I started off with burning Maxell02, which gave me a lot of errors and a range of quality between 92 and 96.

Everybody says that Tayio Yuden is one of the better media, so I got a 10-pack of Fuji TY02's. Although the errors have been reduced a lot, it seems like I still have a lot more errors than most others. I need some help interpreting my scans and what I should do from here. Should I call Benq and ask them?

Here's my scans:

TY02 at 8x (Firmware B7T9):

My Maxell burns (Firmware B7T9):

8x - Maxell02 - using the create a disc option (Firmware B7T9)

By the way, I just downgraded my firmware from B7T9 to B7P9 (hope this is okay to do), because I saw someone had really good results with the B7P9. Anyway, I am still getting 96 quality but the errors decreased even more for TY02. I am just a little bit concerned about the errors toward the end.

8X Fuji TY02 Firmware B7P9

The overall quality of the TY02 for both firmwares is almost as bad as the Maxell02's.

The links work...but for some reason if you just click on them, you don't get anything. Try copying and pasting them to a new window.

The Maxell discs seem to be really variable. Other than that, it doesn't look too bad. Could it be a bad batch of discs?

Are you running with an 80-conductor IDE cable?

Re: Do I need to return my drive?

Blackrain...... Here is a scan of a factory DVD movie done on a Benq ( tried it on a BTC 1108 and i locked up at the layer change with a score of 30 ) So I think you are getting as good or better than factory pressed discs.
If you were to rip this disc to put it on a SL disc look at the errors that you would have to work with.

How do the errors correlate to corrupted files? I want to use my burner to back up stuff.

For the maxell burns, I was using the IDE cable that came with my Maxtor 60 GB HD. I have no idea if it is 40 or 80 wire. How can you determine something like that? I have recently switched to the IDE cable that came with the BENQ retail box. So for the results for the TY02 (Fuji) (Discs 6 and 7 above), I was using the IDE cable that came with the burner. I am assuming that it is 80 wire.

Maybe I am not understanding you correctly. For the scan of TY02 at 8x (Firmware B7T9) (Disc6.jpg), I had 137,313 PI errors and 52 maximum. It seems like the scan you are showing has much better results. The Maxells look really bad. I am trying to figure out whether there is something wrong here. I have 30 days to return this drive. I am going to try the TY02's from the 25-pack cakebox and see if I get better results. Does anyone suggest any other media I should try that i can get at a retail store like Best Buy.

The Verbatim 25 pack 16X are a good choice. They are $28.00 today. Pricey, but it should tell you if the drive is working correctly.

Here's a "typical" burn on one of them http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=649

In order to get better results with TY02 you could try some things.
Defragmentade your harddrive before burning, I have diskeeper installed to defragmetade my harddrive. If noticed better ressults when the harddrive is drefragmentaded before burning a disk.
Are your running some anto spyware tools like Ad-Watch?, turn it off.
Have you checked your pc for spyware, maybe some spyware is running in the background. Try to run as less programms in the background as possible.
I have not checked what your pc configuration is, how much memory do you have, is your proc overclocked? What if you turn off the virusscanner during burning process.
Do you use the pc during the burning process?
What i'm trying to say is, try to get a optimal pc configuration during the burning process.

Re: Do I need to return my drive?

Blackrain that disc scan was from a factory Pressed disc. Cost of the equiptment to make them is probably in the millions of dollars and they have errors like that!!!!!!! I think your TYs are showing pretty good burns.
Cor808 suggestions are good, also when shrinking a movie I would heed the same advice as compression of video is very demanding on the CPU. Also if you are shrinking the movie that I did the scan on look at the errors that you are starting off with. I assume that they would carry over into the copy. If I am incorrect someone will correct me I'm sure.
I have some Philips -R 8X CMC Mag AE 1 That I'm trying to use up. It burns fine at 4X on my 3500 but has large pixils and stops and starts when burned at 8X on my Benq even though QScan says it is OK for 12X. I have yet to see a burner burn every media that comes out good all the time. My benq hates sony D11(8X +R) at anything over 8X but will burn TY T02 at 16X with good results(TDKMIJ) but will only burn TY T02 (Fuji MIJ) 8X at 12X. I think TYs are kind of like buying olive oil, 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th squeezing of the olives. The best TY T02s I have found are Plextor, Thats, TDK and Sony branded.

Re: Do I need to return my drive?

I had a steady 98% quality score until this error poped up right at the end!!!!
I thought TY's ruled even though I burned it at 12X which was Qscan recommended.

and what the hell does this "No Additional Sense Information (0000)" mean?

I've had that same error happen. Did you just leave the disc in the drive and do the quality scan or did you eject and reload the disc? Because there is something about my drive that doesn't like the DVD being left in the drive from one operation to the next. Try that same disc again after you've removed it..

Re: Do I need to return my drive?

hey Bob!!! it worked, you were right, this time it scanned throughout without that "No Additional Sense Information (0000)" error. I had a 98% quality score right up till the end where I got a PIF spike and brought the score down to 94%. I guess I can't complain since I burned a 8X media at 12. I've seen others burn the same media at 12 and sometime at 16 with excellent results. I've noticed that +r media tend to give higher pie and pif's toward the end of the disc compared to -r which usually give a constant scan from start to finish. I wonder if firmware B7T9 will make a difference?

I wonder if these FujiFilm 8X dvd+r media are real TY's or counterfit ones.

what does that downward spike at the beginning of every scan mean?
I see most people having it.

I have ordered some cerftified original TY T02 just to check this, but my first burn produced a very similar result to the Fuji's. I have never seen a near perfect score either, not sure why others get those results. (My NEC seems to do slightly better with these media, although every other mediacode burns better in the Benq).
