Yes, a lot of information, particularly about LightScribe. Some of us were wondering who was going to support it in software. It's encouraging that you can revisit the disc and burn additional text/graphics in line with content.

Any ideas on media pricing though? I wouldn't like to think the hardware was being sold cheaply with the consumables expensive (ie like inkjet printers)...

Ist the Hardware of the drive the same as BenQ 1625 and is HP 640c identical to the BenQ 1625?

The main PCB should be the same on Philips, BenQ and HP. However the 2nd PCB where the LEDs and the tray motor in located should be different compared with the Philips and BenQ/HP.

The BenQ and HP should be identical (inside hardware). But somebody needs to open their BenQ and Hp to prove it 100% though.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

Thanks for the info jan.
I ordered a HP640i in Germany and already have it. The Philips or BenQ weren't available here. "HP640i" is printed on a label on the drive, but I also find "BenQ" on it. Windows (and my BIOS) says it is called HP640c.

This is really confusing cause I read the BenQ drives have the eject button in the middle. On my drive it is on the right!

Are you sure that you are not mixing up the eject button with the emergency eject hole?

Hp’s LightScribe drives:

Emergency eject hole on the left side – Lite-On OEM
Emergency eject hole in the middle – BenQ/Philips OEM
Emergency eject hole on the right side - LG OEM

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

Ah got it! That sounds more clear, thx again. So 640c is really a BenQ/Philips drive.
Do you know if there are plans to release a P3.4-like firmware for the BenQ/Philips drive? Then I could remove my Philips 1640

According to Ala42’s MCSE (Media Code Speed Edit) the support for DVD+R9 DL at 4x and DVD-R at 16x, are already included/implanted in the firmware P1.4. So I guess they just need to be activated/turned on.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

An office supplies retail chain (Office Centre) in the Netherlands is offering the LS Philips dvd drive but the model seems to be different from the review... it does not have the multicolor LED but two small ones labeled Writing and Disc In. Unless they used the wrong pic in the ad... the front bezel says CDRW 2400.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

I just got the dvdr16sl from pcworld for £69.99 (seemed a fair price) It was to replace my liteon 811s which was a right pain and far too choosy. SO I got the philips wired in (its in an external usb box) and tried to burn some data on some infiniti dvd+r disks but It never gets to finish! always burn error. This is worse than the liteon! Is there a firmware update or something to get this working? current f/w is p1.4

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

Hi italights, and welcome to our forum.

The Philips DVDR16LS needs at least 1.6 Ampere on the 5V and 1.8 Ampere on the 12V.

Check your power supply for the external cabinet, to see how much Ampere it gives (output).

Besides there are hardly any external cabinets that will allow true 16x DVD-writing by using the USB2.0 interface.

To make sure that your drive is not faulty, try to connect it, to the IDE-interface if possible, to see if the drive will make any burns successfully.

A firmware newer then the P1.4 should be available soon.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

Thanks for that advice, you say hardly any enclosures will do the job. Does anybody know of one that will? I have to use an external box because my pc is an asus digimatrix, very small and no room to plug a full size dvdr in.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

A new firmware for the Philips DVDR16LS is available, the P1.5.

Changes from firmware P1.4 (initial release) to P1.5
  • Improved WOPC (Walking Optimum Power Calibration) to improve writing quality on all DVD media.
  • Improved writing quality on DVD+R Double layer discs.
  • Improved writing quality on DVD+R 16x discs.

You can download it here.

It is not mentioned in the changes nor in the media list, so I think we will have to wait a bit longer for overspeed. But I hope the writing quality gets even better with this upgrade.

Re: Cdfreaks presents Philips DVDR16LS review

@jan70: Thanks for the firmware. Please ask your contacts at Philips to update their official media code list.

Here is what I found in the firmware. 16x write speed is probably still locked, but at least the media code names are accurate.

//OFF TOPIC//

CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media ) is a mechanism that ties a recording to the media on which it is recorded. It is supported by some DVD recorders, but not by many DVD players. Each blank recordable DVD has a unique 64-bit media ID etched in the BCA. When protected content is recorded onto the disc, it can be encrypted with a 56-bit C2 (Cryptomeria) cipher derived from the media ID. During playback, the ID is read from the BCA and used to generate a key to decrypt the contents of the disc. If the contents of the disc are copied to other media, the ID will be absent or wrong and the data will not be decryptable.
