Bought new drive. Still same issues. HELP!!

I have a nec3540a. Every dvd I backed up would turn out to skip during playback. So I bought a benq dw1655 and im having the same issue. Along with the benq drive I built a new computer. After using two different drives, I don't think they are the issue. Never had this issue with my plextor, but it broke about 3 months ago. When using my plextor the device buffer stayed at 99% and movies played great.

What happens?.....

I load up iso in daemon tools and use dvd-shrink to shrink it. Then I use DVD Decrypter to backup the dvd. While backing it up the device buffer flickers between 85% - 90% and ever so often will drop around 10%, causing the speed to drop below 2x and jumps back up.

Things I have tried...

1. TY disc rated at 8x. I have 5 different 50-pack spindles and tried differenet dvds from each.

2. Nec 3540a and benq dw1655

3. Tried 2.4x, 4x, 8x speeds

4. Doing nothing else on my comp, while dvd is burning.

5. Tried different dvd players during playback.

6. In device manager they show UMDA 2 - ultra 33 is the transfer mode, but "Let BIOS select transfer mode" is checked so it overrides the transfer mode.

7. Raptor = Location 0 Primary ATA channel. Plugged up using SATA

Maxtor HDD = Location 0 Secondary ATA channel. Plugged up by SATA

Benq 1655 = Location 1 Secondary ATA channel. Plugged up by IDE going from MB straight to drive, nothing else on the cable. Also tried a different IDE cable.

8. Tried using copytodvd and it gives the same issue as DVD Decrypter.

9. Uninstalled drivers for secondary channel

Help my problem and I will paypal you $10

Re: Bought new drive. Still same issues. HELP!! (win money)

Keep your money

OK first the "dancing buffer" (drive buffer) is normal with all high-speed drives. It's the calibration kicking in, happens several times during burns, nothing to worry about. What you must keep and eye on is the software buffer (in Decrypter, it's the one on the left).

Now to your issue. It screams "poor media". I wonder what you burned on your Plextor, maybe you bought new discs because you had a new, faster burner...? It could be the culprit. Many poor discs out there.

Please :
1. mention the discs used (brand/model)
2. Perform a quality scan with one of these discs with CDSpeed on either drive (With the Benq: @8X, with the Nec: @5X or @8X)

Now there is this UDMA thing, if you've got this checkbox ("Let BIOS select transfer mode") you use an OS version that I don't know of (or that I forgot ). Which OS is it?

the first thing that came to my mind was poor media as well, but he said he used TYs...unless they are fakes then I think that rules out the TYs, but just to be sure he should definitely post where his media came from.

I'm trying to think of things that would remain consistent even when changing drives. I'm not even sure if this is possible but could it be a power supply issue?

i don't know much about power issues, but this was my guess because if I were building a computer it would be the first thing I'd screw up...not enough power for all the crap I'd want to include haha.

Re: Bought new drive. Still same issues. HELP!! (win money)

Disc's are TY dvd-r. The same media I have been using for over a year. I usually get them from supermediastore.com

I'm using windows xp, with antec 550tc PSU.

As for cdspeed, I get an error for quality scan, any other programs to use?

Pic of error and benchmark

You can't scan a blank DVD!

I'd like to see a scan of one of these BURNT DVDs that skip!

You have XP? Then what is this checkbox you're talking about? - never saw this one.

Re: Bought new drive. Still same issues. HELP!! (win money)

Nvidia drivers have been known to cause major conflicts. I'm not a hardware expert, but rolling back to microsoft drivers might be a good idea.

if you do a search on here for Nvidia drivers in relation to burning, you'll see nothing but problems. I'm not sure if that's your problem, but it's definitely not helping your situation.

As for the scan: not the greatest (looks like a dusty disc), but not something that should give reading issues. Would you perform a transfer rate test (F2) with this disc, on the NEC drive? (better leave the PC idle during the test !)

The second scan is rather ugly. Burnt on the same drive?

Nope, this is the writing strategy, apparently you didn't select the right test and you've put a blank DVD in the drive?

The transfer rate test (press F2) must (like a scan) be performed on a burnt disc, and I actually I would like to see this test performed on the first disc (first scan posted - MATRIX 1 )...

Different drive. If you look right above the graph it says Recorded with (drive name here.

Here is another, while running transfer test on the Matrix disc.

Yes, sorry. A bit tired.

Gets confusing. The Matrix disc has a good scan (not the others), but has a poor reading curve. This happens, but what causes this discprepancy bteween a scan and a TRT is, in general not related to the way the disc was burnt: reflectivity, wobble, track precision... => physical characteristics of the discs.

So I'm stil having second thoughts about the quality of your TY discs. A bad batch is always possible, so different results from your previous batches is a possibility. I've seen users complaint about TY discs from Supermediastore... http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....upermediastore
Are yours "regular" or "value line" discs? It would be interesting to burn a couple in another system (a friend?) and see if they play nicely (good reading curve in the TRT, no skipping...)

The NEC burns are poor.... mmmmhhh.... sorry I'm too sleepy, hope someone else will pop up with more ideas...

Cheers

Re: Bought new drive. Still same issues. HELP!! (win money)

My disc are TYG02 which are suppose to be the premium ones.

Don't have anyone with a burner to try my media in. Will try my drive and media in another computer.

Also, going to buy a pack of ty from rima and allmediaoutlet.

You can keep your money bandit390...

The way this thread is going right now leads to nowhere. bandit390 please provide this basic info;

- Where is your media bought (links to webpage if possible) and what is the disc serial no.
- Provide Nero InfoTool output posted as .txt file attachment.
- Burn one of your TYG02's as "Create Data Disc" in Nero CD-DVD Speed at 8x. Save and post burn graph image as attachment (.png).

Note also, simulating a (-R) burn in CD-DVD Speed is useless. Scanspeed for NEC's is 5x AFAIK. For fast page loading save all images for posting with .PNG extention...

I dont think a quality test is possible, but it is possible to do a transfer rate test on blank dvds, at least it is on my benq 1620

TO bandit390:

When you save your images in cd-speed its much easier just to click the floppy-disk icon in the top right of the cd-speed window (next to the minimize button).

Save the image as a PNG as it gives much better quality than jpeg and a smaller size.

When you upload your images try uploading them to cdfreaks when you post by clicking the 'manage attachments' button which is just under where you enter the text when posting.
