| BenQ Support - should I bother? See reply below. After basically stating that *NO* DVDs work in the drive, regardless of type, they now want me to list exactly what DVDs I tried. I know, in some cases it may matter, but somehow I don't think the fact I tried "Fox's Girl With A Pearl Earing", "Warner's It's All Gone Pete Tong", "Reader's Digest's Yesterdays Britain" "HP 8x DVD-R 4.7GB" and various other media I had lying around is really gonna add anything else to the description? Are they just trying to fob me off, cos it kinda sounds like it. From : BENQ Europe Support Subject : RE: Tech Feedback Form: DW1650 Dear Sir, You haven't mentioned anything about the dvd media you are using. Are you using dvd media from our dvd media list. If the problem persists please contact our support hotline on www.benq.co.uk . BenQ Support -----Original Message----- To: BENQ UK Support Subject: Tech Feedback Form: DW1650 Problem Description: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Purchased a refurbished DW1650 from Komplett.co.uk on 31st October 2006. The drive appears to intermittently refuse to read DVDs of all types, and has done so since purchsing. It will read CDs and burn DVDs fine. At times the drive works perfectly, and will continue to do so until the PC is shut off. At other times, about twice a day, though varying with the system it's in, it will refuse to read DVDs, doing this from boot and continuing for a short amount of time. The problem is only solved by waiting, usually for a number of hours. Rebooting the system does not solve the problem. Sometimes if left for an hour and rebooted at various times inbetween, the drive will eventually work on one of the boots, and continue to do so for anywhere between an hour and a day. At all times, the drive continues to be recognized by BIOS / operating system, and will read CDs and burn DVDs fine. DVD-Rs, whether containing data or not, are recognized as blank discs and can be burnt to, and also scanned with the QSuite tool, but trying to access them through Windows Explorer gives the error message "Drive not accessible. Incorrect function". DVD-ROMs are not recognized at all, and accessing the drive through Windows Explorer will give the error "Please insert a disc into drive". When the problem occurs, inserting a DVD will cause the green light to flash a number of times, followed by a clicking noise from within the drive. This happenes between two and three times, and either the light will then stay on in the case of DVD-Rs, or remain off in the case of a DVD-ROM. When the problem does not occur, for either DVD-R or DVD-ROM the light will flash a number of times and then remain on. I've tried numerous things to fix the problem, and the problem persists throughout. These include: Updating firmware to BCHC and BCIC. Trying the drive in multiple PCs (including one with an nForce2 chipset and one with a VIA chipset). Using the drive in multiple operating systems on the same PC (Windows XP Pro and Suse 10.1). Updating various drivers in Windows (IDE and disk drive). Uninstalling various software in Windows (QSuite, Nero, disabling various startup programs). Changing IDE transfer mode of the drive. Changing IDE cables and master / slave positioning. Enabling / disabling IMAPI cd-burning service. I'm now almost 100% certain there is a fault with the drive itself, but would obviously like your input incase you know of a solution to the problem and if not, if I should contact either the company I purchased the drive from or BenQ to return the drive for a replacement. |

| Re: BenQ Support - should I bother? just realised, i actually told them the media works fine on many occasions anyway, so it can't be too hard to assume that the media is perfectly compatible still, if they want it, i can compile a list of every dvd i try. they'll have fun fun fun looking through that lot ![]() ps. why does the edit button have to dissapear after a few minutes ![]() |
