That's how to improve the DQ60, replace it with a real BENQ..

I don't quite see the point of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I mean, I could fit my entire pr0n collection on one disc, and what am I supposed to burn after that?!? Nero data discs???

Write speed of 2x for Blu-Ray on the 1000 - sounds like it will take a while to burn a disc!

I don't know about you but it irritates me when I get better looking 720p from my digital cable company and my own home bought DVD's only play at 480p. Hence why I'm looking forward to these formats.

But keep in mind that 2x translates to 25GB of data being written in 30 minutes, very fast. Considering all of the other current limiting factors, even 4x would be really pushing the envelope.

Re: BENQ DW1670 here at CES2006

Is the 1655 good enough to be a dedicated reader once the 1670 comes out? Then I'm guessing a 1675 with LS?

Ugly drive though. Looks like a crappy silver version of their OEM design.

You'd think they'd put a fancier-looking one on display.

Interesting that the write speeds for DVD media is slower than current gen DVD writers. Only 12x for +R/-R and 4x for DL media.

Re: BENQ DW1670 here at CES2006

Interesting pictures LiteUp thanks, the fact that Solidburn is featured on the 1670 could mean its a BenQ/Philips chip if so I think I will put off those plans to get a 1655

Also not sure if photos of this drive are at CES or even if its on display but Philips announced the specs of their "TripleWriter" SPD7000 Blu-ray burner.

http://www.ces.philips.com/downloads...ay_Release.doc

Quote:
Philips’ TripleWriter features a 2x (72 Mb/s continuous data-rate) read and write speed on BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE media. The drive reads and writes a variety of legacy media including CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

Additionally, Philips will launch four types of discs (BD-R and BD-RE, single layer 25 GB and dual layer BD-R and BD-RE 50 GB) together with the introduction of the TripleWriter. The TripleWriter can be built into any PC featuring S-ATA interface.

Philips chip...
The 1655 doesn't add that much over a 1640, so I also can't see any reason why get 165* if one owns a 1640.

No more Philips IDE writers when BD enters the scene?

BTW, 72MB/s makes more than 50x DVD speed. Thats fast!

Re: BENQ DW1670 here at CES2006

I figured the HDDVD burner would come out first. This could put the Blue Ray camp up one on the HDDVD camp.
Did anyone notice the BenQ discs shown in the BENQ DW1670 pic are DW1655 discs?

Sidenote: I want HDDVD to win this war. The machines will cost less as will the blank media. And from what I have read the copy protection will be much stronger with Blue Ray. Feel free to correct me if I read wrong on the last part.

Re: BENQ DW1670 here at CES2006

Yes - as I look @ the photo of the DW1670 you see on the lighscribe cd's 1655! :-) Very Nice!

Yes - I hope too that HD-DVD will win - but only time will tell! With the release of the HD-DVD Driver (external) for XBOX 360 this year and hopefully good software on HD- DVD it will push it further.
