BenQ DVD DD DW1620

Hi All...I'm new to the forum but it looks like a great place with a wealth of knowledge and I thought I'd try and ask for some help.

I have a BenQ DVD DD DW1620 DVD/CD-R DVD re-writer which I believe can be 'flashed' to allow burning of dual layered DVD's. A friend tried to 'flash' his to allow dual layer burning and totally trashed his drive so I'm looking for some expertise on which flash file to use and a location I can get it. I'd be grateful if anyone has an answer or some suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Re: BenQ DVD DD DW1620

The main problem comes when a 1620 owner tries to flash from a Gxxx firmware to a Bxxx firmware. If your current firmware is the B series just get the firmware from BenQ
and flash away. Make sure you identify the BenQ 1620 as the drive you want, have no disc in the drive, wait until it is over, and don't lose power.

Re: BenQ DVD DD DW1620

If your computer sees your drive as a "DVD DD DW1620" then you have 'B' series firmware and can update to B7W9.

If your computer sees your drive as an "ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16" then you have 'G' series fimware and will need to crossflash in order to use B series firmware.

When you update your firmware always ensure that there is no disc in the drive. DO NOT reset or turn off your computer whilst the update is taking place. Always reboot after updating the firmware (you will be prompted to do this anyway). And then your drive will be fully updated.

What DL discs are you using? Did you do a quality scan with Nero CD-DVD Speed?

They are Datasafe DVD +R 2.4x DVD's

Never heard of the Nero CD-DVD Speed quality scan. What is that worthwhile doing? Many thanks for the helpful input though Chuck.

It will give you results in graph form to help you check the quality of the disc. If you do a Nero Cd-speed quality scan at 8x upload it onto here as a PNG file when you post, and we will let you know how the quality is.

You can get cdspeed here: www.cdspeed2000.com

Unfortunately, the quality scan shows a bad burn.
Will that disc play all the way through in your player?
If so, count yourself lucky.

I've never burned any DL discs, but I seem to
remember reading somewhere in this forum
that the Ritek DL's aren't liked by BenQ drives.
I think there's a DL scans thread here somewhere.
Anyway, don't give up. If all else fails you can
try a different brand of DL media (like Verbatim).

Re: BenQ DVD DD DW1620

You might want to look through this thread.
Even though it's for the newer DW1655 you can
get an idea of what is working and what's not.

Ritek DL discs barely work on any drive.

I'm lucky then, my only DL burn (a Ritek +R) with a retail 1655 is read properly by my picky player
