BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Hi Guru's

Need Help.. Here is my situation

Brought a Benq1620 from Staples black friday.
Installed it on my system ( 2.6 mz,pent 4 hyperthreading, 512 Mb ram, 9200SE graphics card)

Recognizes the hardware ok, shows up as Benq1620 but when I place a DVD to play, boom, crashes the system. It happens only with commercial DVD's. I played self recorded DVD's and audio without any problem.

Did all of the following.
1. Installed the ASPI update from the adaptec site
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/su...=aspi_471a2.exe

2. Changed the jumper settings to make it master and my previous dvd as slave. Also disconnected previous DVD writer and had this one as Master and Cable.

3. Flashed the firmware to BP79 using winDWFlash.

still the same shit.

I am unable to understand what the issue is. It does not crash in the safe mode though I am unable to play the movie due to display settings. Unlike in normal mode as soon as the player starts to recognize the DVD it does not crash..

Sorry for the long post. Is this a firmware problem or aspi driver problem or what? There is no device conflict anywhere..

Somebody suggested to unistall all DVD software and install the hardware and then reinstall the software. It did not help.

any help is appreciated..

is the drive toasted?

thanks

Get rid of the ASPI 4.71 and use 4.60.

One idea:

Right-click on your CD Drive, Select "Properties", and pick the "AutoPlay" tab. From the pulldown box near the top, select "DVD Movie" and then select "Take No Action".

See if this stops the crashing.

Thank you for responding. Where do i get the 4.60 ASPI. Adaptec sites specifically asks to use 4.71 for 2000 and XP. But I will try what you suggested and see if it makes any difference..

Ok I updated or rather demoted the driver to ASPI 4.60 by installing the same from driverguide. NeroInfotool shows ASPI installation version as 4.60 and everything is fine..

BUT the problem stays, it crashes as soon as the DVD is loaded. Oh and I made it to 'Take no Action' on autorun.

I just confirmed with another friend of mine and he has the same problem..

are we doing something wrong or is it time to return or RMA ?? help and guidance is appreciated

thanks

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Can you tell us more about your system?
Motherboard, OS, Service Pack? IDE Drivers?
Did you run KillASPI, before loading 4.60?
If not do so, and reload Aspi 4.60
& this may be a long shot, but what DVD player software are you using?
I have had problems with Intervideo WinDVD, but not with Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Hi guys..

Following are the system specs.

1. Pent 4, 2.6 g processor, 512 DDRAM 3200, 9200 Raedeon graphics card.
HP dvd 300i writer (works perfectly).,100GB HDD(primary) 160GB HDD(sec)
BenQ 1620 B C9 --> BP79 -->B S9
Windows XP - Home Edition, DirectX 9.0c (just upgraded 1 hr back rom 9.0b)
SP2 ----> downgraded to SP1 1 hr ago.
Upgraded to ASPI 4.71a2, after reading the reply here downgraded to 4.60.

I did not do a killASPI, do I have to use the frcASPI17.zip ( and the contents) of it to do this. I had downloaded the same from someother side and installed it directly.

Uninstalled all DVD playing software. Just loading the DVD in to the drive and the reading of it crashes the system. .

Now, I just moved this piece to my other tower which runs off Win2000 and it f*****g works no problems..

So WTH happened with Windows XP home version. I will try to killASPI once. I am running out of ideas here..

thanks for the hints..

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Yoy need to run killaspi 1st before installing aspi 4.60. It deletes hidden files. This could be your problem.
You still did not say what is your motherboard maker & your IDE drivers?

4.instASPI
5.reboot.

One piece of advice : Reinstall your system but first just unplug your other drive for a test

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Well, it does not appear to be IDE driver conflicts, or ASPI problems.
One question are you using cable select on your hard drives? If so, jumper to master & slave. BenQ as sec master.
And have you tried the BenQ as only device on sec master, jumpered as master?
From left field, try using the cable from your tower that the BenQ ran properly on.
Does your old DVD writer if installed now, function properly? if not, I suspect OS.
Not being familiar with Win XP Home, I do not know if any patches are required for proper DVD implentation.
At last resort, reload your OS, but 1st see if any others can point you in the right direction.

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Hi dishinit.

Thanks for taking the time to read and relply back.
1. I am using them as master and slave, with benq as slave, i also tried with BenQ as master.
2. Yes I disconnected my other DVD writer and had BenQ connected as Sec master, Sec cable select.

Both of then give the same effect --CRASH

3. I just connected the other DVD writer and it works alright.

4. Only thing left over is to use the cable from the other tower.
5. Install Windows XP Prof on the other HDD and disc the one with Win XP home and try to see if it works. If it does then its Xp home thats messed up. May be a reload of OS might fix it.

6. If not this goes straight back to the place I brought it from.

Sick and tired of this shit.. no pun intented to people who love this drive, its just driving me nuts..

thanks

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

If your BenQ worked fine in your tower, then the drive is OK.
Someting in your OS or system setup is not right.
Be patient. Sleep on it, answer will come.
But fresh XP Pro on another hard disc is a good start!

Hi

Thanks for the support. I want to try everything before I return it back.

1. As suggested I used the cable from the other box and tried with that, same problem persists.

2. I disconnect all drives from the tower and had this as Master, Sec, Cable select - same problem

3. Another friend of mine has XP home edition and he has the same problem.

The drive plays Audio, Software and backed up movies ok, and croaks on Commercial DVD , how much freakier can it get?

I am going to install - XP Home on seperate HDD and try again. If it works fine otherwise would install XP Pro and try again.. Otherwise I have run out of options..

Hell i build my pc in 2 freaking hours and its taken me 2 days now and still not able to figure out the problem here..

thanks guys for all the tips and support..

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Kris, I had the same problem, its probably not the drive. Tell us what software you have installed. I found out after hours of fighting that it was Sonic DLA causing the problem. There are some playback programs that causes software conflicts. I started by uninstalling all programs that had the capability of playing back dvd's. This worked for me.

Give it a try before you retun it. Post the software you have.

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Dennis.

Here is the software that is installed on the box.
1. Nero 6.1.1.3 Ultra Edition
2. DVD Shrink latest
3. DVD Decrpter
4. HP DVD writer software. ( full suite)
5. Some image editing software(Arc soft)
6. Win DVD ( uninstalled)
7. Power DVD (unistalled)
8. Radeon 9200 SE driver + Hydravision
9. DVD xcopy
10. Real Player

I am going to install each of these and try..

AND AND AND

When I did a clean install of XP -PRO it works... but I had to install the Radeon grapichs driver though or it wont be able to play and gives a " Overlay error blah blah blah'

NE way not that I know its an OS error I will probably unistall all add on software and try to see what is the issue..

thanks for patience to read through my posts and I WILL GET THERE

Before doing all this. I ran the MSConfig and disabled all the services except Microsoft, that included my Anitivirus, ATI tray service, someother that were in my start up.

OK i am almost there. Uninstalled all the DVD playing writing software on my drive. AND its not crashing now and it works..

Now I am gonna install back some of the 'Required' software and see it it crashes the system. As I write installed Win DVD and its fine. Next comes DVD shrink and Decrytor.. these are all i need and I did not have to unistall Nero (BTW I had 6.3.1.6 and not what I mentioned earlier)

I will try to burn some stuff and see it its really working and report back my findings to the forum..

thanks for all of you for staying with me and helping out..

Nero will play nicely with DVD SHrink and DVD decryptor. You dont need the HP stuff or DVD X copy. Hope it works.

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

Oh do watch your anti-virus while installing software. It should be off when installing most cd/dvd writing software because most anti-virus interferes with the installation of drivers.
Power DVD will play nice with Nero, Decryptor, and Shrink.

DVDXcopy will install the Patton Couffin driver which sends many computer down the drain fast (severe speed issues). So, avoid DVDXcopy if possible. Check for any VSO driver listed in Device Manager to be sure that thing is gone.

Yeah, any packet writing software, such as Sonic DLA, Roxio, Adaptec, and Nero's own INCD package will quickly cause dvd coasters.

It sounds like you're about home free. Best of luck.

Re: BenQ 1620 Crashes system..Please help

I sure wouldn't install Real Player, it is like AOL, it takes overand has caused many problems. It just doesn't play well with other software, and it leaves traces all over the place, it is hard to remove all of it.
