I will look into the 12x and 16x burning issues of the 4120/4160/4163 firmwares in the next days.

If I knew where to find the firmware I would add support for the drive.

Out of those, I have only one 4082 though it's about 400km away from me right now. (I'm accessing CDFreaks.com from one of the many PC bangs in southern South Korea because I don't have any computer here.)

The firmware for the 4165b is on the Ausie LG site.
http://au.lgservice.com/
I don't know how many of these are or will be around. Seeing there is some confusion with a 4167b.

Yes it is there alright. It was there a few days ago when I checked. Here is a direct link to it. Not sure if it will work though as LG's links might be dynamic :

http://au.lgservice.com/jsp/common/d...p&FILE_GUBUN=B

If that doesn't work, the SG LG website has it as well. I find that strange because the 4165B isn't available in Singapore.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

It is the very first drive. Go to Product Support > Device Driver > DVD-ROM(Writer) in
http://au.lgservice.com/. It is firmware version DL04.

I'm hosting 4165B DL04 firmware on my site.

Check here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...showtopic=7592
First post near bottom has the link to firmware. (sorry can't direct link to page)
Also a review of drive still in progress.

Cool, I have a feeling that the 4167B will be very similar.
So you may get 2 drives done at once.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

All LG firmwares are very similar . Only the additional 12x and 16x MID tables do not fit in well, probably added by different developers.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

In the mean time I know how these tables are used and why 12x speed is not available for -R media on the 4163. I have to make some tests now on a real drive. Do you volunteer ?

I might as well if you need another alpha tester.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

I have here a 4160. I can test some 16x dvd-r memorex media for you using your software.

Currently the drive can only write at 4x on it.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

Here are the longhand results of ala42's hard work on creating the alpha version of this special RICOHJPNR01 @ RICOHJPNR02 firmware which I had tested.

Using DVD Identifier, we get the result as attached. It shows that the 8x and the 12x descriptors are available! YES that's RIGHT! (YIPEEE!)

Now, for a Nero CD-Speed Create Data Disc burn.... and yes, that line goes to 12x thru Z-CLV! Yep, it's working so far.

The problem seems to be the burn darkness, it seems to be really light in the 8x and 12x regions. Here is the surface scanned with a scanner, not great and doesn't really show what i'm saying, but the outside regions are MUCH lighter in terms of burn than shown.

Just put it through a speedhacked DDU1615 (Sony DVD-ROM equv to LiteOn 16P9S). Doesn't look too bad, bumpy in the 12x region - probably correlating to the burn darkness issue.

Still to do error scan.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

Damn, my editing time went out before i could post the scan. Here it is. Quite nice when you look solely at errors, but what's concerning is jitter. Seems like the LG is not so smart on the laser power and is clipping outside the laser power margin of these discs - meant to have jitter < or = 10% as classified as good. People do say BenQ reports jitter +2% of cats, so i guess it's alright.

Still think my BenQ burn looks more reliable, and trustable. Z-CLV and having patches like that on the disc surely do not impress me.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

Have a look at the quality scan again, or check the DVDIdentifier output .

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for LG DVD-Writers

I'd like to try out the RICOHJPNR01 to RICOHJPNR02 firmware?

I have a decent pile of them ... and would like to try to burn them at a higher speed.
