LG HL-DT-ST GSA-H10N won't read Sony DVD+R DPR47L3

As the name says my DVD +/- drive by LG which has the serial number HL-DT-ST GSA-H10N won't read the Sony DVD+R DPR47L3 DVD's I bought. I don't know if it's the DVD's or the drive becuase I just installed it and these are the first disc's I've had in it. When I put one of the DVD's in and try to access the drive through My Computer is says "Incorrect Function" and thinks its a CD Drive. The firmware I'm using right now is JJ11 but I have JJ11 and JL11 and can switch between if it helps.

If it helps any it says the following on the front of the drive:
Super Multi
RW DVD+DL
DVD Multi Recorder &
Compact Disc ReWritable Ultra Speed

The exact drive I have can be found Here. Which is also where I bought it from. Do you think it's the discs?

I should also add that I tried playing the movie "Robotz" in the drive and it played perfectly fine with PowerDVD.

If you are putting a blank disc in then it has nothing to read since the disc is empty.

Windows is not capable of burning DVD's itself; you need appropriate burning software such as Nero installed.

The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them-words shrink things that seemed limitless when in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for the want of an understanding ear. - Stephen King, intro to "The Body."

Yes, but can't windows at least recognize the disc and open it to display nothing? On the desktop computer when I try to open it I just get "Incorrect Function" error but on my laptop I can open the DVD as if it were an empty folder..
When trying to copy a DVD with nero it takes a full burn image then gives me an error message similar to: "The disc you inserted is compatible with this type of project" "Please insert this type of disc: CD-RW" "The current disc is: None"
So this must mean nero doesn't recognize it either?

I'm think it's the DVD's... But I'd like a second opinion.

I'm having seconds thoughts on that its the discs. I bought another kind. DVD+R. Memorex this time. Still no luck. I'm really curious as to why it isn't working.. And also I have 20 dvd's which have one purpose, Frizbees.

Actually, nope. Windows isn't capable of recognising blank DVD discs. To recognise a blank DVD disc, you need to have a DVD burning engine, something Windows doesn't have. But it does have a built in CD burning engine. What it probably does is to try and use the CD burning engine to access the DVD. What happens in the end is that it concludes the disc is not a valid CD disc, so it cannot write to the disc. Hence the error message.

As for why you can open it on your laptop, I'd guess your laptop has a packet writing program for writing to DVD discs installed by default on it. Many laptops that have a DVD writer come preloaded with such software. The packet writing program is essentially a drag and drop DVD burning engine for windows explorer. That is why the laptop can recognise the discs as blank.

What version of Nero were you using? Some older versions do not properly support DVD writers, or were a bit buggy. However, please don't go and get Nero 7 just because of this - it is rather bloated and is also known to be buggy. Nero 6 is stable and isn't anywhere as bloated as Nero 7.

It might be the discs, but why then did you get something worse than Sony? You do know Memorex is really not a brand known for quality media, don't you?
