If you are interested in doing disc scans, the best option is the liteon

What geno888 said, but if you don't care about quality scanning, the H10N probably has the edge (slightly) in burn quality, particularly for 16x discs.

Re: LG GSA-H10N////LiteOn Allwrite SHM-165P6S-02C

I can be unbiased about this because I have both.

The LG has the edge when it comes to burn quality. It also has the edge when it comes to speed, when using 16x media, even when burned at 12x times, because it uses a higher RPM for the PCAV. Media branded below 16x is about the same as the LiteOn, as it then uses ZCLV for this media at 8x and 12x. It's also a very good reader.

The LiteOn on the other hand is much better when it comes to overclocking media (most media can be burned at one speed higher than branded (4x -> 8x, 8x -> 12x) and has the ability to learn a strategy for unknown/fake or changeable media, which tends to future proof the drive more (not dependent on firmware updates). It also has scanning capabilities (Quality, Jitter and TE/FE). It's also a good reader as well but +-R media is limited to 12x reading in the official firmware (LG is 16x).

If you are going to get just one drive then I would personally suggest you get the LiteOn but I can tell you, it's much more fun if you have both of these drives.

Correct me if I am wrong, but most of these features are only available with test firmware and tools, that have test status or are in an very early alpha state. Sticking with stock firmware and official tools, there is not much left of these.

Additionally, the Litey is not very good at writing CD-R media
