Strange but True ! Panasonic RP62

I recently upgraded my Panasonic RP62 to firmware v.073 from v.051...

The reason i decided to upgrade my firmware is because I am having a hard time getting my Panasonic to play DVD-R's (the drive clearly states that it is capable of playing DVD-R's), I have been using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4.7GB, 4X media (which I was told was one of the best types of DVD-R media around)...

This media plays fine in other stand alone DVD players I have in my house, one of them is a sony. But, I can't get the Panasonic to accept it, I thought the firmware upgrade would help, but it didn't.
...

Ok,
I have now tried the following DVD-R media :
FujiFilm
Memorex
Imation
Taiyo Yuden

I also just tryed a DVD+R by fujifilm... and guess what, IT WORKED (no bitset either)!

This is really strange, the Panasonic RP62 spec's say it can only read DVD-R's NOT DVD+R and yet it will play my burned DVD+R ?

Why is this happening ? I can't get a DVD-R to work for the life of me, yet the first DVD+R i tried worked and its not even supposed to...[or at least it doesn't advertise that it will play DVD+R's]

How does this make sence ?

Thanks
-BassKozz

My computer drives:
DVD-ROM - (lite-on 166s) - Used to rip the DVD's
DVD+-RW - (BTC IDE1004) - Used to burn the DVD-R's and DVD+R's

BTW - Both drives have the latest FirmWare

ok, I have done some media tests using K-Probe, I have heard that your not supposed to use K-probe with a Lite-On DVD-ROM drive and only a Burner drive but it worked anyways...
I tested out the media I have been using and here are the results...
All the DVD's are either the original or burns of Billy Madison:
1. DVD-ROM (original)
2. DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x- This did work in my player
3. DVD-R Imation 2x
4. DVD-R Memorex 4x
5. DVD-R Taiyo Yuden 4x
The only one that played in my Panasonic RP62 was #2 "DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x"

1. DVD-ROM (original)

---
2. DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x

---
3. DVD-R Imation 2x

---
4. DVD-R Memorex 4x

---
5. DVD-R Taiyo Yuden 4x

The only one that comes close to the FujiFilm DVD+R is the Memorex DVD-R, but it still doesn't beat it...

Now does this mean their is a problem with my BTC Burner, with burning DVD-R media or is it a fact that DVD-R media isn't as good as DVD+R media ?

I am just trying to figure out what is wrong with my drive(s)...
please help

In this case it probably has something to do with the DVD-R writing strategy used by certain burners (such as BTC and LiteOn) that the Panasonic players do not like. I've seen the same type of problem reported with LiteOn drives and a Panasonic player and after searching found another instance with a BTC drive. So the problem is half with your burner and half with the player.

Other than what you have already done it appears you only have a few choices:
a) Use +R media
b) Buy a different set top player
c) Buy a different DVD burner (Normally I'd recommend the LiteOn 812S, but in this case, because of issues with LiteOn drives and your set top player I would recommend the NEC 2500A)
