Standalone DVD Player Questions

Bought a cheap DVD player Akura ADV147AS for £30 now it states in the instructuons it is compatible with DVD/CD/CDR/JPEG/MP3 and on the box it states DVD-RW/DVD+RW (nowhere does it say vcd/svcd) now ive succesfully played VCD/SVCD and also it has picked up some of my Mpeg files on old DVD backups. Im new to standalone DVD players ive only ever used my pc and ps2 for dvd playback can anybody explain how it is doing this as it doesnt say it will in the instructions and also on the mpeg files it plays from old backups it will only play them from dvd discs and it will not allow rewind or fast forward, also it plays mp3 from dvd but it garbles some of the songs i think its only on dvd mp3 discs it recognises as cdrom the dvd mp3 discs it picks up as mp3 play fine. an explanation or link on how i can best exploit all this extra stuff it can do that i didnt know it could would be appreciated! thanks, btw all the stuff it says it can do like play dvdr and cdr it does really well a highly recommended player.
