Sony RDR-HX900-how to read discs from burners - Club CDFreaks

HI everybody:

I have a Sony RDR-HX900 which I love. But after plenty of reading and Googling, I still cannot figure out how to create DVDs using my PC that are readable on the HX900.

Generally, it just gives me a disc error, saying the disc is unreadable.

I am certain the discs are good, as I've compared exact model numbers of discs as recommended by Sony, and I have no trouble writing to those same discs from the Sony. Either way, I've tried about 5 diff. disc types.

So far, things I have tried described on the web include:

1. Formatting -RW and +RW discs using the Sony, and the writing the files
using Nero on my PC. This yielded same error message.

2. Writing at lower speeds, such as 1x or 2x.

3. I would like to try book settting to DVD-ROM, but I'm not sure my new
burner (Pioneer 212D) is capable of that. Darn, should have stuck with
NEC burners.

Has anyone had any real success in creating DVDs using a PC that are playable on an HX900?

I've made many discs that are readable on my RDR-HX910 (successor to the HX900).

My guess is that you're burning in the wrong format with Nero - you can't just write the video files as a data DVD, you need to use the right format (DVD Video).

My RDR-HX910 doesn't care about BookType - I'm not sure about the HX900.

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem. I made certain every disc was DVD Video. Remember, some of them were even formatted using the HX900.

What model discs did you use, if you don't mind?

Any other ideas? If bit setting isn't necessary, that would be nice, because it's looking more and more like my Pioneer burner won't do it for anything other than +DL discs.

Lots of different models. Here are some favourites:

Verbatim 16x DVD+R (MCC 004)
Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R (YUDEN000 T02)

Have you tried using recordable media (DVD+R and DVD-R) as opposed to rewriteable media (DVD+RW and DVD-RW)?

I think you can modify firmware for your Pioneer DVR-212 to enable bitsetting for DVD+R using MediaCodeSpeedEdit; I know it works for the DVR-112 and DVR-111. Check the Pioneer forum.

along here. Let's assume you're right, and that it has nothing to do with
bitsetting.

I looked at one of the first DVDs I was given by a friend, and it's a Verbatim
DVD+R 16x (Disc ID: MCC-004-00). That disc plays fine in my RDR-HX900.
ImgBurn reads the following information from it:

If you can keep track of all this (I wish I could have put captions on the
images), it looks like the disc that I can read in the HX900 has an
Imp ID of Nero, and the disc that doesn't work has an Imp ID of DVD Shrink.
Since they both have the same Media ID, and are both labelled as Verbatim
DVD+R 16x discs, I think it's safe to say the problem is probably not in the
physical disc type, but something above.

Okay, I MAY HAVE figured it out. The DVD was in PAL format, and the HX900 only reads NTSC discs. Or at least that's what the manual says.

I tried getting it in NTSC, and it plays fine. Chapters are a bit messed up, but it works, nonetheless.

I'll check another title to validate my hyphothesis.

I never thought to consider NTSC vs PAL since it's usual for DVD players (and recorders) in Europe to play both formats, and I assumed it was a European model Sony RDR-HX900 because that model exists in the European market, and I didn't think the same model numbers were used in North America. This just goes to show that it's wrong to assume.

I hope you have found the solution to your problem.
