I am in Europe but region-free would be good too since I own a lot of American and Asian discs. Either out of the box region-free or a relatively easy hack.

Re: Recommened DVD Recorder that will play XVID DIVX and MPEG4?

How about Mustek R100LM? I think it's 120-133 Eur (based on Divx.com). Divx.com doesn't say it can play Xvid but I found a Hungarian site that said it can: " * DivX/MPEG4, AVI & Xvid
* DVD, DVD±R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, (S)VCD, Kodak Picture CD, JPEG
* Recordingl: DVD+R/RW
* PAL/NTSC "

But I don't know if it's region free or not. It could be though. You could try to find it in a shop where they let you test whit a DVD (I've bought my player that way.).
