JVC DR-M7 drive seems to have died

Hello everyone. I've been a member here for a while but haven't needed to post previously.

I'm fairly experienced with DVD Recorders, having owned a Toshiba DR-1 when they first came out, and a Liteon LVW-5006, which I still have (Thanks to their 2 year warranty)

When the Toshiba's drive failed after about 16 months, I replaced it with this JVC DR-M7 (same as the M10 but without DV-in). Today, after about 16 months of fairly light useage, the drive seems to have failed (suddenly).

I was watching a home-recorded DVD-R, paused it to answer the door, and when I came back, the drive was whirring very loudly and the disc would not continue. Now whenever I put another disc in (I've tried DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, original DVD and original CD), it just whirrs very loudly and displays "Disc Error". Won't even read a lens cleaning disc.

So is there any kind of miracle "reset" option or is it joining the Tosh in the DVD recorder graveyard in the sky?

It was chipped for multiregion, so I don't propose to try shouting at JVC.

Any suggestions at all?

Ta for reading this, by the way.

Since you have nothing to lose you could try opening the drive and cleaning the lens.
Open the recorder case and see if you can remove the 4 screws holding the top cover on, remove the cover and carefully clean the lens. Hope for good luck.

you may find a replacement drive for the model you have (but don't think so), but if you have the space save it someone may have the solution. Good Luck

To date I have had 1 DVD recorder APEX die, two DVD players die 1 Liteon, 1 Philips, 4 DVD burners die 1 hp, 3 Liteon.

For anyone that saw this thread, I've fixed it. You can't always rely on lens-cleaning discs. I took the lid off and cleaned the lens properly.

Seems good as new again now.

What did you use to clean the lens?
