How do they store/write?

I recently bought my first standalone DVD recorder. It's an Emerson EWR20V4 and it works fine. I was surprised to see recording modes that went out to 8 hours and I'm sure those look pretty hairy but I don't understand how they can do that Unless the incoming video is spooled to RAM (at predefined resolutions matched to the speed offerings) and then burned to disc during the "finalizing" procedure. Does anyone know if my assumptions are correct?

Re: How do they store/write?

Hi jeffreyclay, welcome to CDFreaks!

Standalone DVD and HDD/DVD recorders have MPEG2 encoders that can encode a video stream in real-time.

There's a buffer involved but I'm not sure how large it is.

The finalizing procedure is used to create or update a menu and making the disc playable in other drives; the MPEG2 encoding has already taken place before finalizing is performed.
