DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

Hi,
Basically, I burn say 7 movies in AVI files into a DVD, would a DVD DivX-enabled player be able to play them?
What about MPGs and MP3 on DVDs - but that's just a side question.

Also, if yes/no - does it mean for all Divx players or it depends on the brand and the model?

Can somebody recommend a good DivX DVD player, btw?

Thanks,
SpaceGoblin

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

Hi there and welcome!

Well, it all depends on the player. For now there are no official standards for this. Some playes support this, others just don't. This mainly goes for DivX and MP3 enabled players. About playing MPG files I can't tell you too much: I didn't find any player yet that can play some loose MPEG files on a disc.... but as I haven't tested a zillion players....

Maybe you can take a look here to see what players there are on the market.!

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

Hi my DVD settop player will play any standard mpeg file on a standard data iso DVD. My player is the Goodmans GDVD132 this is about 2 years old now also my other DVD player will also do this and also creates a small menu with file names so you can choose which file to play this is the Pacific DVD Player - DVD1002W about £40 in an asda store near you, if you live in the uk that is.

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

I just bought a Trio DX-628 DVD/DivX Player here in Australia (http://www.triocorp.com.au/DX-628.aspx), not sure what they are known as elsewhere. Based on the latest MediaTek chipset, it bloody fantastic. Plays all DivX (3.11,4,5) and Xvid I've thrown at it. Further, it plays MP3's & raw MPEG (VCD & SVCD) burnt to DVDR. Infact you can have MP3. MPEG and AVI's all on the one DVDR and play them all. Even plays miniDVD's. Price here is $199 (about US$145). Oh, it also plays DVD's & DVDR's

Thanks, everybody!
as I found out AVIs can be played off a DVD-R, at least on the Philips DVP642.
And that's what I am buying

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

I have the phillips DVP642 and it plays divx files on the DVDR disks no problems.

It doesn't play QPEL encoded files. I've only had one file out of a hundred I've tried spit back because of this.

The Sigma & ESS chipset playes cant play QPEL encoded avi while the newer MTK chips set machines (like the Trio I bought) can.

JVC NP10S DVD player can play multiple avis off a dvd+r or -r.....it has a blue menu screen and you just scroll through and pick which movie you want to watch.

It doesn't play well with QPel codec as well though, just like the Philips.

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

I have a KISS DP-500, it is from the first wave of DivX players. It plays must of the things that I trow on it, having nice LAN capabilities. You can find lots of hacked firmwares out there and they have a nice community on the internet already. They support subtitles (very important for me) on many formats (SRT, SUB, TXT...) for your AVI files, but not for the MPG ones. It doesn't support subs in IDX/SUB format when playing AVIs (copied directly from a DVD sub track). This model doesn't read QPEL AVIs as have been said before.
Resuming I am very satisfied with it, you can find this player pretty easy now in the stores and it doesn't cost you much. If I was buying now a player I would have gone for one of the new ones that support QPEL and that doesn't have problems with very high bit rates. Hope this helps.

The KISS forum can be found at http://www.gooddvdstuff.com/kissdvd/ if you want to take a look.

And as a side benifit the Philips 642 does play mp3 dvds so long as the bitrate is not over 256 kbs

"-if this makes sense could you please get back to me thank you ellen" I have no idea what your trying to ask, but I doubt it has anything to do with the original topic of "DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD". Please ask your question in the appropriate forum by starting a new thread.

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

This DVIX seems excellent... very nice to be able to store and play various media files out of the HDD (which is I guess what we want out of the box), but it doesn't look like it has recording capabilities, am I right ?
It would be amazing if this kind of device could as well record any video source (like TV), and then play it (while recording or not) and have all these fancy recording/playing possibilities some of the DVD players/recorders have... Just a thought

The DViCO TViX costs about the same as common DVD players, not DVD recorders.

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

Thanks for your answer Kenshin.

I have to say that I don't know in terms of prices - you are probably right, but I know that I would be more keen buying this product if it was recording as well. In fact, I'm dreaming of a device that would play my divx and allow me to throw away my DVD player and my VHS video recorder...

Anyway I think that recording will be the logical evolution for these usefull and handy HDD boxes.

Cheers.

Re: DivX DVD player and AVIs on DVD?

KISS is comming with a device that can record DVDs also, I ignore what chip they will use, they work with Sigma. I hope that the new one from them bring Qpel playing and that it can handle downloaded SRT subs with MPEG1/2 files. Another subs nice feature would be if it can play ripped subs (.idx .sub) ripped directly from DVDs without needing to convert them to SRT with subripper.
