Digital Video Recorder & Home Entertainment Discuss, Considering 3 DVD recorders.... at International Chat: Hardware related forum; Yea I'm not sure how good the Curry's people are. Actually I'm happy with the 3480 for VM recording (and like CCR I don't have a big requirement for HDD-based editing/burning). Also not likely to get a HD display anytime soon...

I think if your important criteria are the optical disc recording compatibility, HDMI and upscaling features, then go for either the Panny or the Philips 5500.

The 6 hour buffer/HDD editing is nice, but possibly not a deal-breaker?

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

XP one hour speed has excellent PQ: SP nearly as good two hours; and will fit many movies, but LP 4 hours will hold longer movies or two movies and unless you can see the difference is a prime choice. Any thing for more than than 4 hours can be worse than a recording made on a VCR at 6 hours.

OK, sounds good. Now just to hope Curry's B&M have the 5500 in stock, or I'll be ordering online (and have to wait...arrrrggghhh!).

No, true, as I said HDD stuff isn't essential, with a pack of RW discs I can live without it

Thanks you guys

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

Got the Philips 5500, about to start setting it up now

Funnily enough, even though it wasn't on their online site, Curry's also had the Panny EZ27 in stock for the same price

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

Thought I'd add some scans if anyone is interested

So far, this machine is a beauty. Easy to set up and use. One beef is the buttons on the remote are a bit of a pain, I believe Imkidd mentioned something smilar in his review of an earlier model Philips.

Scanned and TRT'd on two different machine, hence the different CD Speed versions. This is the second use of a Verbatim 4x DVD+R.

Burning a TYG03 now to see if it'll give me the chipset info in CD Speed

LOL, I have absolutely no idea. The quality setting was SP (default was SPP) if that tells you anything

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

About Quality Mode = Record speed; 30 min. (XP), 1 hour (SP), 3 to 4 hour (LP), more than 4 hours (EP). The names have no standard. As a rule more than 4 hours can have worse PQ than vhs tape.

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

Yeah, these are the modes and times listed in the manual (which is amazingly easy to follow BTW, even for a DVDR n00b like me! Easier than all the VCRs I've come across):

HQ (High Quality) = 1 hour
SP (Standard Play) = 2 hours
SPP (Standard Play Plus) = 2.5 hours
LP (Long Play) = 3 hours
EP (Extended Play) = 4 hours
SLP (Super Long Play) = 6 hours
SEP (Super Extended Play) = 8 hours

Luckily I don't think I'll be recording anything over 2 hours long

Re: Considering 3 DVD recorders....

One more scan, this time of a TYG03 disc

It appears the DVDR 5500 has the MT1858 chipset, which is also used in the LiteOn DH-20A3x PATA series drives. My Philips has a better drive inside than the one I have in my PC LOL!

Nice jitter (by my standards anyway)
