Can RCA DRC290 play DVD+R DLs? - Club CDFreaks

I just bought an RCA DRC290 and I am having problems playing DVD+R disks. I was looking for an inexpesive DVD play that would play DVD+R DL disks. I wanted to replace my two Sony DVD players that will flawlessly play DVD+Rs, but not DVD+R DLs.
From my experience with the Sony's I burned 7 copies of the same 7.5GB movie.
I used various burners, media (including Verbatim from Singapore), and book types. I found that the DRC 290 will not recognize two of the copies. It will play the other five, but the menus are screwed up in the same way on all five of them.
The menu sequence seems to be incorrect. They will all stop at the end of the FBI warning, and a couple weird french menus are inserted.
The result is that I cannot really use the menu to start the movie. Once I get the FBI warning, I just keep hitting ">>|" until I get to the opening scene of the movie.
While my Sony's played DVD+Rs without fail, but could not play a single DVD+R DL, The DRC290 seems to have the same menu trouble with DVD+Rs and DVD+R DLs.
I have seen a number of good reviews of the DRC290 on this forum. Di I just get a bad one?

Not sure my DRC257N plays them fine
