Actual video resolution on my dvd recorder

I have Panasonic stand alone DVD RECORDER. Its the model just before the hard drive versions came out.
Anyway I've been using it to back up my miniDV home video for a while now, but only recently I tried to edit some of that video.
That's when I noticed that the resolution of the video was 352x480 !! ??? Eh? Anyone else notice that? Am I being cheated of resolution now? My miniDV is 720x480....
when I play it in PowerDVD, it looks fine, but if I try to access the video using virtualDub and dvd2avi...it shows up as being 352x480 and the picture itself is squashed.

Re: Actual video resolution on my dvd recorder

352x480 is Half D1 NTSC and is a standard dvd resolution, although obviously not as common as 720x480. i've never used a standalone recorder, but is there a setting to record at 720x480? a better option might be to capture the video onto your computer, author your own dvds from there, and then burn them with a dvd burner. that way, you'll have more control over the resulting output.

Re: Actual video resolution on my dvd recorder

You are right. I am going to have to do it the "old fashioned" way...lol
simply firewire card gets my video into my PC, and then I use tmpgenc to convert it to mpeg-2.
