What causes a registered copy to expire?

I'm a registered AnyDVD user using 6.0.1.1.
Every once in a while (maybe every month or two) AnyDVD decides to give me a popup "Your trial version of AnyDVD has expired" and it shuts down. Usually right after a reboot. I just re-register it using my purchased key.
Why whould this happen periodically? I don't have to uninstall or reinstall I just reregister the AnyDVD key and I'm back in business.
More of a nusance but I would like to know what I may be doing to cause this to happen. Any guidance appreciated.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

that's strange, and i don't think i've ever seen the problem addressed on the forum. every once in a while when updating someone will have to re-register using their key, but I don't think I've ever heard of it happening out of the blue.

might be a good question to send off to support(at)slysoft(dot)com and see what they have to say.

unless you're playing around in the registry quite often i don't see any reason for something to just happen to your key, and it's certainly never happened to me.

for some reason I'm iterested in the answer to this question so if you do decide to contact slysoft and they give any suggestions be sure to post them here!

OK, I fired off a copy of my post to Slysoft.
I will advise as to their response when I receive it.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

Well I received a rather prompt but totally unacceptable response. Basically the stock "your setup file is probably corrupt", don't use a download accelerator, clear your cache, blah blah blah.
This likely is not the case since the program has been running for weeks before it just up and forgets it's registered. If that's a corrupt setup file then the last 3 upgrades have the same exact problem.
Maybe my OS is hosed but if it is AnyDVD seems to be the only victim.
Why would AnyDVD just all of a sudden (from time to time) forget it's a registered installation and issue a "Trial period has expired" message?

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

i've never had problems with slysoft's tech support, but more often than not tech support people are busy and assume everyone is stupid (pretty safe assumnption since most people contacting tech support probably have no idea what they'rea talking about) Just speaking of tech support in general...dealing with confused people all the time can certainly be frustrating!

James (Slysoft on this forum) has always gone out of his way to explain things and rectify issues. he doesn't log on daily, but he's on often enough so maybe he'll see this thread and have some insight.

out of curiousity, have you tried totally uninstalling then redownloading the install file and reinstalling? doesn't hurt to give it a try in the meantime.

if i see James on I'll try to remember to bump this thread.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

I would uninstall it as said clear the temp folder, temp. internet folder, and cookies. then run this http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html .

After that reboot then re-download and apply your key as needed. This should insure there is no corupt registry or download. Things happen and it is rather hard to figure out all culprets all the time.

he has already stated his key is legal.

yuo can't just run around accusing everyone of lying. it's one thing if someone asks an obviously illegal question, but I think it's getting a little out of hand.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

@reasonsnotrules
his question was what can cause an SS program to fail
my answer was one of the causes
I didn't accuse him of anything

So simmer down
you have been getting very uptight lately

i'm nto worked up or uptight. he stated in the original post that his key was purchased from slysoft. this means he has a purchased key so an illegal key isn't his problem. I'm just trying to help identify what his problem might be and how to fix it.

also when i said "it's getting out of hand" i didn't mean just you specifically so there's no need to get defensive about it.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

back to stuff that might actually benefit the original poster...

do you have a second PC that you can install anydvd on as a test to see if you get the same problem? this would at least tell you if it's something unique about the particular pc that it's on.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

@zaq

We need to start calming down on the noobs because if we constantly attack all of them this will ruin slysofts rep and people won't be getting it no more. It only takes one person to spread bad rep about any support on a product. Plus their is alot of reports(not about you) about people flaming new users. We want to avoid this and try to help when all is ruled out then such acusations can be observed. If my suggestion about cleaning everything didn't work I'll be on that trail. Unless there is an abrasive antivirus or registry stopper we are unaware of that is in use on their case. Summers here and heat leads to alot of anger and violence. We must all try to rule out all possibilities. If worse comes to worse they can email their reg key to SS and see if that may of been blacklisted or an error there.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

reasonsnotrules
the reason I made that remark about the key is that even tho it does not apply to the OP (you are correct he mentioned immediately that his key was purchased)
is that other people who may read this post and get de-registration esp after an update may know that illegal key use is a cause, and probably the numberone cause

as far as helping the OP
I cannot at this time think of anything to help him
but will keep an open mind
Cheers
BTW hope you a good 4th
and everybody else too
(I had to go to work today )

Zac, you often give good advice and you are a respected member. But you are also sometimes abrupt, overly confrontational and wildly outspoken. Reasons has always been your friend and has supported you a few times.

There is a harmony to staying within the "form" of good manners ... one can embarrass or accuse someone while still maintaining good form ... it's actually more skillful and fun than blurting out the first thoughts that cross your mind ... like it's the "expert" level in the great Game Of Communication.

No dis intended.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

I dont think it is a corrupt key other wise it would not register at al
and the key itself is just a simple text file

I think it is agood idea to try to reg on another computer and then put the clock forward 60 days and see if the problem repeats

To all
I am/will try to keep things calm
am going to have a tall cool one any body want one?
will try a google search and se where that leads
worked all day and now will relax by trying to help someone
Cheers to all

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

here is somebody having a similar problem with nero
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=159121
the gist is to try to clean the registry of all software related terms, reboot, reinstal program and then enter reg key
reg entries to try to delete would be
anydvd
slysoft
elby

or first you could try to delete the avydvd registry key entry here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SlySoft\AnyDVD\Key
reenter your key after a reboot and see how it goes
by forwarding PC clock 60 days to see if problem recurs

let us know how it goes

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

And don't forget to save (off-computer) your original slysoft key before you start the reg. clean up or uninstall procedure... just to be safe.

Save it to a diskette, burn it to a cd or copy it to a RAM stick for instance.

Re: What causes a registered copy to expire?

@doc
do you think cookies and state of internet cache will affect the registratrion of a program?

BTW that prog you linked looks good
does it work on Xp X64?

I seem to recall another person with a registration problem, but I think they never followed up with if what we suggested worked or not

burn ban in texas, but the local AFB is still going to have fireworks
they are federal, don't listen to anybody
Digital highway signs in Texas read as follows
"COMPLETE BURN BAN IN WHOLE STATE OF TEXAS AND BON FIRES TOO"
