Virus Alert!

Just cross-posted this to the CopyDVD forum:

Heads up! I just ran my daily virus scanner (AVG Free) and it found a trojan horse in the AnyDVD file titled RegCheck.exe I don't know if the infection is mine alone or whether it's more widespread. I run the scanner daily and the infection wasn't there the last time I ran it on Thursday of last week. I sent a note to SlySoft requesting that thet check their files.
It's a jungle out there.

Re: Virus Alert!

Yup, and the likelihood that it's another false positive caused by an AVG update is pretty near 99% or more if you got it from slysoft. If you got it from somewhere else, all bets are off.

Very likely a "false alarm". Anyway, you should uninstall AnyDVD and update AnyDVD to the newest version. Latest AnyDVD doesn't use RegCheck.exe anymore.

Re: Virus Alert!

Me too, Me too. I just got an alert from AVG that Regcheck.exe had the trojan GENERIC.CIL and came here to check it out. I update AVG daily and scan daily and this is the first time that I have seen anything from AnyDvd. I also use 1Click and AVG found a trojan in every update install EXE from 1Click. I hope they are false positives.

Re: Virus Alert!

Hello Folks,

For Forum Members in this thread that are reporting problems with AnyDVD RegCheck.Exe I believe that you need to read Forum Members Tru posting #3 in this thread concerning AnyDVD RegCheck.Exe. From some time now the AnyDVD software program does not use RegCheck.Exe. If your copy of AnyDVD contains RegCheck.Exe means that you are using an old outdated version of AnyDVD.

As suggested by the knowledgeable Forum Member Tru you need to visit SlySoft (http://www.slysoft.com) and download the latest version of AnyDVD.

Best Regards,
bjkg

For what it's worth, I'm using the latest version (5.4.4.1) so that wouldn't have been the cause alone. Maybe when the update is applied as an update, rather than a clean install, it leaves clutter behind?

Re: Virus Alert!

fudd,
I think that you are correct, also using latest AnyDVD (5.4.4.1) and have a Regcheck.exe file in the AnyDVD folder. I just update over the previous version whenever a new version is released.
regards

Yes. As I said: uninstall AnyDVD and update AnyDVD to the newest version. But having an old RegCheck.exe "hanging around" does no harm, it isn't used. (and it isn't a virus either, if it is the original from SlySoft). You can delete it manually as well.

I also have the latest and have been using AnyDvd and always just install over the old version. I just renamed the offending file.

Re: Virus Alert!

My AV found this in a backup of an early Any DVD, but as it was a generic Trojan horse with no other info on it and the new one was OK I realised that this must be false. I've removed the old backed up version and all is well.

Re: Virus Alert!

Hey! Great forum folks. I didn't mean to cause any unnecessary alarm with my original post. I recently had a nasty bout with trojans and viruses on my kid's computer. The viruses won. Had to put a bullet through the hard drive to put it out of its misery. I'm a tad bit obsessive with these things;two firewalls, two different AV programs, four different spyware scanners, motion detectors (kidding) so it really corks me off when something gets through.

This was my first post and, surprise of all surprises, no one flamed me to a crisp, there were no condescending "if-you-weren't-such-a-slimebag-you'd-have-known-better" remarks. These days it's a victory for humanity when you can carry on a civil discussion on-line.

I appreciate your help.

Re: Virus Alert!

You shouldn't really have 2 firewalls on the go at the same time as they tend to conflict and make yor computer more vunerable than just having one good firewall.

Re: Virus Alert!

You should never have 2 A/V's running together, as they will conflict with each other, and you may not even be able to start up windows (talking through experience) had a bug**r of a time to shut down some processes so only one av would start before i could uninstall the other av.

Re: Virus Alert!

fudd, your post could have saved a lot of people loads of hassle, so don't feel bad about it. the very, extremely very! small chance that a Slysoft programme picked up a virus along the way is still worth alerting people to it. Fortunately, this time it's just one of those things that some anti virus proggies can't distinguish between the real thing and just a part of a programme.

Nice humble post.
Just a suggestion, I would disable the virus detection program while burning, and by all means use only 1. Many claim they have no issues burning with AV activated, I myself choose not to gamble and disable it as well as all startup programs when I burn.

It really depends on what AV package you're using, how it's configured, and what you're burning. I personally have no issues with mine but that has not always been the case in the past. It's probably good advice to disable AV while burning, BUT, to add that you should scan whatever it is you plan on burning first.
